Inspired by the classic movie ‘Riders on the Storm’ and a crappy US winter, Giro jetted some of their all-star American team to rip pristine Champery pow last season. And scored.
Champéry is a low-key Swiss town tucked away in the massive Portes du Soleil ski complex, a region of 13 interconnected resorts across Switzerland and France comprising 206 lifts and every type of terrain imaginable. Last season, Portes du Soleil, the “Doorway to the Sun,” was also the doorway to deep powder.
With an underwhelming season underway in North America, our crew of Bryan Fox, Curtis Ciszek, Nils Mindnich and Alex Rodway chose Champéry as a destination—a natural fit for these snowboarders inspired by footage of legendary riders shredding in the classic snowboarding film “Riders on the Storm.”
But would they find the same epic conditions that Farmer and Perata experienced? Indeed, the trip was highlighted by sunshine and airy powder, slashable windlips and steep landings, with uncrowded and untracked slopes. And that is the reward for following the engrained urge all of us snowboarders have to seek out new terrain and epic new experiences.
