Ståle Sandbech makes an afternoon decision to blast the highway from Oslo to Folgefonna to link up with Gimbal God, and it paid off in spades…
As you’ve probably gathered by now, we’re got something of a crush on this Norwegian summer shred spot. We already gave it the deep dive treatment in our Folgefonna Hot Spots episode at the start of this year’s season up there, and have been hyped on the (mostly) weekly Fridays at Fonna wrap-ups the Mushroom Crew have been firing over that chart the day-to-day and week-to-week highlights.
And what’s not to love? The patch of ice sits surrounded by fjords offering some killer backdrops, not to mention that being so far north means that Golden Hour lasts a while longer than at lower latitudes. Some of the sunset shoots that have gone down there over the years have been burned into our memory banks.
Ståle’s no stranger to Fonna, and has been part of some of the more recent memory bank burners we mentioned above – remember the Rome One Jump edit from a few years back? And with his filmer Gimbal God – arguably the hardest working filmer in the game right now – already in the house with an all-star crew including Halldor Helgason, Sage Kotsenburg, Sven Thorgren and Len Jørgensen, he waited till the big jump was ready, hit the road and rolled straight into a classic sunset Fonna booter session.
That Method the edit opens with is a thing of rare beauty, and from that first hit this edit is all about what goes down on a snowboard shoot. The goofing around, the goodtimes, skating, fishing, resting and, most importantly, stacking the bangers.
And though you only get teased on what trick Ståle has a full on fight with to land, it’s a great look at the teamwork and hard work that both rider and filmer regularly have to put themselves through to get the shot. It’s also refreshing to see that Sandbech’s not just a machine who can throw tricks at will (though he does say ‘sometimes I can land that trick first try’, so perhaps he’s still more machine than man…), and we’re already frothing on the full jump edit that Mr God assures us is ‘dropping later’.
