Total Solar Eclipse Snowboarding in Svalbard

Watch some breathtaking footage of last week’s total solar eclipse captured by┬áStian Aaland in Svalbard, Norway.

After some precise planning, Stian Aaland did what very few, if any people in the world will ever be able to say they have achieved, by snowboarding during last week’s total solar eclipse, high up in Norway’s most northerly reaches.

Solar Eclipses occur when a new moon passes between the sun and the earth, blocking out the sun’s light. The total solar eclipse of March 20th 2015 was watched worldwide, although only a few places across the globe would have witnessed ‘totality’- where the sun is completely blocked by the moon, plunging the Earth into temporary darkness.

Stian Aaland did what very few, if any people in the world will ever be able to say they have achieved, by snowboarding during last week’s total solar eclipse, high up in Norway’s most northerly reaches.

Svalbard, Norway was one of those places, and Stian Aaland hiked up into the mountains to see the sun completely masked by the moon, before dropping in on his splitboard for some once in a lifetime turns while the sun was still 90% obscured.

You can definitely understand Stian’s excitement here, and we’re sure that the video doesn’t do the spectacle justice.

The next total solar eclipse will occur on August 21, 2017 – better get yourself down to the Southern hemisphere and have your snowboards ready!
