The World’s Largest Dryslope is in… Turkey?

Dryslope manufacturers Snowflex have unveiled what’s claimed to be the largest dryslope in the world. Surprisingly, it’s not in the UK, Netherlands, Korea or home of big, the US, it’s in Ankara, Turkey. And, boy, do that have some dramatic music.

AltinOran in Ankara, Turkey, has followed in the footsteps of the legendary inclines of plastic fantastic in places such as Sheffield (RIP), Liberty Mountain (Praise Jesus) and Halifax (Praise Wayne Taylor), but has outdone them all in sheer length and girth of Snowflex, who trumpet “At 11,000m2 this is currently the largest synthetic SnowSports slope in the world today.”

Developed in 1979, Snowflex is an artificial, astroturf-like cushioned surface that allowed dryslopes to move away from the hexagonal horror of its predecessor, Dendix (aka the Bone Snapper), and allowed more sculpted features to become possible – bumps, kickers, berms, and even halfpipes and quarterpipes have adorned Snowflex slopes in years past.

Some solid riders have cut their teeth and carpet burned their arms on Snowflex over the years – the most prominent being the UK’s Jamie Nicholls – so are we set to see a forthcoming influx of Turkish rippers to the scene?

From the drone drive-by, you can see that not only does the slope have a chairlift – yes, a fucking chairlift! – but there already seems to be a few jibs laid out along with a lower, bigger kicker that features two take-offs, and a smaller top kicker. Of course, Turkey does have some pretty sick mountains in its own right – and a couple of parks (we visited one in Kartalkaya years back) – but access for the general population has always been a tad limited. This, though? Maybe.

Any new ways of introducing people to sideways stunting is always awesome, so we’re raising a glass of Raki to ya, Turkish shredders.
