All things considered, Pyeongchang 2018 wasn’t the best one the Swiss have ever had. Defending pipe champ Iouri Podlatchikov ate shit at the X Games and had to pull out, whilst David Habluetzel had already done the same at the Laax Open.
In their absence Pat Burgener stepped up and did everything he could to bring the gold back to Switzerland (all the while entertaining us with his air guitar drop-ins), but his so-near-yet-so-far performance in the final must have stung a little too.
“‘The video has been finished for a while’ says he, ‘but didn’t know about uploading it…’”
Then there was Moritz Thönen, who wound up near the bottom of the rankings in men’s slopestyle after falling on both qualifying runs, and sat out the Big Air altogether after taking a heavy slam in practice.
Injuries suck, but if they’ve got one upside it’s that you finally have time for all those things you’ve been meaning to do for ages but keep putting off til the next down day. The piles of washing, the tax return, the police statement – that sort of thing.
Perhaps that’s why Moritz has now finally put up some footage from the end of last winter, and the start of this one. “The video has been finished for a while” says he, “but didn’t know about uploading it…”
Those triples were looking pretty good – given that Moritz is still only 21, he’ll no doubt be gunning for Beijing 2022.
