Vacation Forever, the first full movie from BYNDxMDLS boys Kevin Backstrom, Tor Lundstrom and their crew, is LIT.
Kevin Backstrom, Tor Lundstrom and their tight crew of hombres – Ulrik Badertscher, David Djite, Max Buri and Sebbe de Buck – spun their successful BYNDxMDLS series on its head last winter. Rather than showcasing all the bangers in their season of webisodes they held the A shots back for their first full movie... and this is it. Welcome to Vacation Forever.
We had a quick bit of banter with Tor about the project shortly before the boys embarked on their liver-destroying premiere tour...
What made you and Kevin want to switch it up and save the best shots for a movie, rather than put out episodes with all the bangers like you've done in the past?
We’ve been doing the episodes for three years, and we always want to go forward somehow or do something new. We just wanted to do a proper movie, we haven’t really ever filmed for a movie part the whole year, and that’s what we wanted to do. We just thought we’ll do the episodes and maybe the riding-side won’t be so good because we’ll save the best shots, but I think they worked out pretty good anyway. We had some lifestyle in there to make it more entertaining and saved the best shots and focussed on trying and get our movie parts going. We didn’t go to places and just try to get something done because we had an episode to fill, we really focussed on getting the tricks we wanted to get for our movie parts.
Was this the first time you’ve both filmed for an old-fashioned movie part? Was it stressy?
Yeah, I guess it was. It wasn’t a lot different; we just go up and film snowboarding and you always have some thoughts about what you want to get, but you want to get that stuff anyway if you’re filming for webisodes. You’re not going to be a better snowboarder just because you’re filming for something else. We go out and film and, this time, put it out in a different way. That’s the only difference. Maybe there’s a bit more of trying to film on big jumps and do cool shit that is really legitimate to have in a movie part.
I guess it’s finished and you’ve seen it. What can we expect? How’s it going to pan out?
It’s not done yet actually, so I haven’t seen it. But it’s getting there, I’ve seen the intro and stuff. We want to try and keep it like a normal snowboard movie, an intro then everyone has their own parts. But it’s looking good. Markus is fucking amazing. It was a bummer that the snow was so bad in Europe last season, so we didn’t really get what we wanted. Like we’re not 100% happy with our… at least me, I’m not 100% happy with my shots. I wanted to get more riding in and more good days, but we got some stuff.
Which riders are in it, and how did you all come together?
Me, Kevin, Sebbe de Buck, Ulrik Badertscher, Max Buri and David Djite. It’s just been organic, we’ve always been hanging out with most of those boys and now we wanted to make a movie so of course we asked them if they wanted to come film. It just came together naturally. The new guy is Sebbe de Buck, though. We haven’t been riding together that much before, so we took him out filming on some trips and we’ve been shredding all season and it’s been so fun. He’s a fucking ripper.
He is a fucking ripper indeed. Cheers Tor!
