Eero Ettala’s Helsinki Transitions

With a little help from Red Bull, Pablo Films and Heikki Sorsa, Eero Ettala turns downtown Helsinki into his own personal night time urban playground.

Though Eero might have hung up his full-part shooting boots when he wrapped up filming Ender a couple of years back, he’s not been resting on his laurels. All that’s done is give the Finnish bossman more time to shoot with the homies, and – as it turns out – dream up crazy ways of riding his hometown of Helsinki, as you’ll see in this, his new project – Helsink Transitions.

Ettala and the Pablo Films crew ticked off a bunch of iconic landmarks – including a Baltic Sea boosting water gap in front of an old, old wooden ship. “I wanted to present Helsinki in a new way and show people how different architectural locations can be transformed into snowboarding spots,” he explains. “Your average Joe sees places differently than us snowboarders.”

Turns out the only problem with shooting this ambitious project was that Eero, as it turns out, is a bit too good. “What makes it challenging for us is the fact that we don’t get to test the different angles until Eero tries the trick for the first time, and he usually lands it on that first try,” says Pablo Films’ Jyri Paajamaa. “We then have to go and ask if he wouldn’t mind doing it again! On the Market Square for example, Eero jumped across the Cholera Basin on the very first go, and we did have to ask for a re-jump so that we could get all the camera angles right.”

The result was a northern light show that’s pretty damned sexy.
