Elsewhere – Winter in Japan

This short feature on the contrasting idiosynchrosies of Japan and the insane snow it regularly accumulates each winter is sure to get you frothing to get down there and ride its fabled pow next winter.

If you’ve ever been to Japan you’ll understand the underlying theme in this edit. The country is at once modern and ancient, brash yet respectful, busy but peaceful. From the manic urban sprawl of cities like Tokyo to the solitude of the north island’s snow-baked forests, there’s nowhere on earth quite like it. It’s a country of harmonious contradiction.

Last season, Australian filmmaker Finnegan Laver spent three months in Japan at the start of the year, shooting documenting the way of life that makes Japan so unique, as well as a tonne of classic powder pillaging from Jack Spence, Troy Sturrock, Jeremy Burns, Andrew Brown and Ryusei Takahashi. “Nowhere else balances the modern so well with the traditional,” says Finnegan, “while the mixture of culture, food, scenery and the warmth of the Japanese people are just a small number of reasons why I end up back here every year.”

After an intro consisting of lovingly-shot Japanese lifestyle of cityscapes, temples and culture we’re quickly transported from the hustle and bustle to the snow-swaddled quiet of the backcountry. Cue an onslaught of faceshots that would make even Jenna Jameson flinch.

If you’ve never experienced snowboarding in Japan you’ll no doubt have it on your bucket list; if you have then you’re certainly itching to return. Whichever camp you fall into, Elsewhere will have you scouting for those long haul flights to Tokyo without you even realising you’re doing it…
