World Snowboard Tour

Norway dominates the 14th Pleasure Jam at the Superpark Dachstein

The two Norwegians Hanne Eilertsen and Markus Olimstad are the proud winners of the Pleasure Jam taking place last Sunday, November 20, for the 14th time on the Dachstein glacier. The two multi obstacles gave the contestants plenty of opportunities for an action-packed jib battle and visitors of the Schladming-Dachstein region witnessed terrific tricks paired with healthy doses of sunshine. Hanne Eilertsen took it all, meaning she also scored the Best Trick Award powered by PortugalSurfCamp, worth 8,000 USD. Her compatriot, Isak Ulstein, reigned supreme in the category Best Trick Men.

Majestic and stunningly beautiful, yet rough and merciless – that was how the Dachstein glacier presented itself on Sunday. At the valley station the riders and spectators were greeted with an almost cheesy sunrise. A few hundred meters of altitude further up the mountain – to be precise at 2,700 meters above sea level – a fairly strong breeze made it difficult to tackle the two kickers of the slopestyle contest. With this in mind, the QParks committee, the judges and the riders agreed to hold a jib battle on the two multi obstacles in the contest line’s end section instead.

Initially, the contestants had to choose between the rainbow bridge and the wallride rail combo, before continuing to the A-frame rail. After the first few rides, it became obvious that – despite the altered mode and contest setup – the first QParks Snowboard Tour stop would develop into a thrilling battle above the Schladming-Dachstein region. Riders were pushing each other and the finals saw both the atmosphere and creativity reaching another level. The winners have more than earned the winning checks amounting to 5,000 USD, while also raking in valuable points for the World Snowboarding Points List National.

FINALS MEN

Already during the qualification runs, the 22-year-old Norwegian Markus Olimstad outshone his contestants and entered the finals with the highest score, where he rewarded the audience with an outstanding performance. “Actually, I was just trying to have as much fun as possible and this worked out fine, I guess,” Markus commented after the contest in his focused, Nordic manner. A plan that was as simple as it was convincing.

Inspired by Markus’ runs, his compatriots Emil Leenderts, Emil Ulsletten and Isak Ulstein entered the leading ranks after the qualification runs. Switzerland’s Gian Sutter was the only rider who was able to break this winning streak and came in second, surrounded by Norwegians. In the end it was Isak Ulstein who also showed the best trick of the day; his Front Blunt 450-out earned him two all-inclusive weeks at the PortugalSurfCamp.

This wasn’t the Norwegian’s only personal success of the day, however: “The conditions weren’t easy, but I made the most of it. This 5th place is my best result yet at the Pleasure Jam and on top of it all I also won best trick.”

FINALS WOMEN

In the girls‘ competition, 17-year-old Hanne Eilertsen was able to succeed and – surprise, surprise! – she is also from Norway. The young snowboarder followed her intuition and changed her plans just before her second final run without further ado. As it turned out, her choice was dead right: “I wanted to do a different trick on the first rail, but then I chose the Switch Blunt 270-out, because I’ve been practicing it longer and it just felt right. I’m all the more pleased that it won me best trick and made me win the competition.” Last year’s winner, Katie Ormerod from the UK, came in second, while Celia Petrig from Switzerland ranked third.
