Check out some potentially groundbreaking new ‘AvaTech’ avalanche technology that could help riders make smarter decisions in the backcountry and avoid triggering avalanches.
Our device, using a variety of sensors and algorithms, is designed to detect the problematic layer changes in the snowpack by measuring snow hardness as you probe.
Avalanches are a real risk on any off-piste terrain, and any technology that can be implemented to rescue people from them – and even better, prevent them from even occurring in the first place, is technology that will save lives.
AvaTech have developed a pretty unique digital avalanche probe that measures the force required to drive it through snow, to create an accurate profile of the snowpack, allowing the user to identify weak layers – the primary cause of rider triggered avalanches.
Previously, the only way to properly assess the snowpack was to dig a snow pit and analyse the individual layers by eye, which obviously takes a considerable amount of time and is prone to human error.
Another key feature of the technology, is the ability for all of this snowpack data to be uploaded and shared across an online network, which, if enough people were using the device to sample a given region, would create a comprehensive and detailed profile of that region’s avalanche risk in specific areas.
Essentially what we’re looking at is easy to obtain, crowd-sourced snow-pack and avalanche data.
This data, both from individual probe readings as well as from the broader pool of data, would allow riders to make more informed decisions about where it is, and isn’t, safe to ride on a given day, at a given time, and could be a real breakthrough if it catches on.
Any technology that can help to save lives is worth its while in our books and we look forward to seeing if this technology will make a real difference to avalanche prevention.
we have developed the first proactive avalanche safety system that instantly analyzes the snowpack and facilitates real-time sharing of this information to help individuals and groups to make better decisions.
At AvaTech, we have developed the first proactive avalanche safety system that instantly analyzes the snowpack and facilitates real-time sharing of this information to help individuals and groups to make better decisions. We started AvaTech because we’ve had our own close calls and even lost friends in avalanches. We are proud to announce the launch of our company and first products, the SP1 and AvaNet, to the mountain community.
