Grasgehren Park Opening 2013

The GG crew have been stoking us out over the past couple winters with their deluge of dope edits, so we decided it was time to pay this corner of the Allgau region a visit as the park opened its doors for the 2013-14 season.

The resort is by anyone’s standards pretty small – two drags and one chair that hadn’t opened – but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in shred stoke. These days it’s increasingly common for snowboarders to be in the minority in many resorts, but at Grasgehren at least 60% of people on the hill were standing sideways. More than this, the riders all seemed to be proper core shredders who wouldn’t look out of place lapping a park in Cali.

For the opening, the setup was mellow which led to an atmosphere more akin to a skatepark session but some super tech jibbing was being thrown regardless. Head shaper Tajo told us that they tinker with the features weekly through the winter and when more snow’s fallen the size of the features swells, but regardless of the nuts and bolts it was clear that this place has a legit vibe to it. I mean, the park was being pumped by tunes from the likes of Jefferson Airplane and Bob Dylan as opposed to monotonous Hip-Hop and you’d see dudes rocking Dinosaurs Will Die, Airblaster and Ashbury while riding with a swagger distinctly inspired by the likes of the North American chapter of our subculture, rather than the more alpine influence common elsewhere in the Alps.

We even snuck off for a short hike to bag a couple of faceshots – the terrain looks good down this way too. One thing’s sure: we’ll be back at GG this winter.

Bonus: Here’s the Salomon/Bonfire crew’s edit from the opening we just spied…
