20-year-old Finnish slopestyle sensation Sami Luhtanen has appeared on the World Snowboard Tour since the 2008/09 season. In 2012, he was named Best Rookie at the Poney Session, where he finished fifth overall, winning the best trick prize on the stairset, and the second best trick prize on the big air and the Dakine jump. He was also victorious at the 2013 Ästhetiker Mäsh in Saalbach.
Sponsor Dakine’s web clips about their riders are normally a minute long, but that just wasn’t enough for Sami – a 90 second custom edit was needed to show off his mix of tech tricks, power and amplitude. His first real video part was in KBR’s 2012 film Snake Bite, and he also appeared in Pirate Movie Productions’ 2013 release Distorted Reality.
Born on 17th September 1993 in the town of Lohja, Sami has been riding since the age of 11 at his home resort of Vihtiski. His two older brothers were already going out on snowboards and skateboards, and when his younger brother began riding too, Sami knew he wanted a piece of the action. He has been sponsored by Ride Snowboards since 2005, after finishing second in his first contest.
Riding with a regular stance, Sami is a trick machine with a lot to say about rails, kickers and style. At Poney Session 2013, he won Best Trick (and a 500 euro cash prize) on the ‘jail rail’ section for his performance of the Cab 27 front board, and he took second place overall with a series of audience-wowing doubles.
