WHITE (USA) & BRIGHT (AUS) CLAIM VICTORIES AT FIVE(5)STAR WORLD SUPERPIPE CHAMPIONSHIPS AND ENTER TTR TOP FIVE

Under broken skies, in an immaculately-shaped Superpipe, the TTR 5 Star World Superpipe Championships produced one of the best pipe-riding contests of the season, as victors Shaun White (USA), Torah Bright (AUS) and the whole rider field showed superb snowboard progression at Park City, Utah, 10th March, 2007.

The World Superpipe Championships enabled riders to showcase their prowess, style and skills in a ‘best of 3 runs’ format, and provide 3,000 hyped snowboard fans with a striking impression of today’s pipe-riding standard. White (USA) took the contest by storm, maintaining his lead after an epic run of enormous proportions. Starting with a super high frontside 1080, into a smooth 1080, to a solid 900, into backside 900, to 720, and finishing off with an Alley Oop Michaelchuck 540, he ‘hands-down, blew everyone away,’ quoted Jeff Brushie, judge & legendary pro snowboarder. White’s (USA) 1st place win subsequently leapt him slap-bang into the TTR World Nr 4 spot on the TTR World Tour Ranking List presented by Swatch. With only 5 TTR results to his score, White (USA) is in with a huge chance to win the TTR World Snowboard Tour Champion title.

Danny Davis (USA) took 2nd place, narrowly beating Mason Aguirre (USA) by just one point with a sharply- executed final run consisting of a 1080-to-1080-to-900-to-backside 900-to-720-to-frontside 720. Davis’ (USA) result edged him up the TTR Top 10 by one place, to sit just behind White (USA) as current TTR World Nr 5. Mason Aguirre (USA) racked up a stylish frontside air-to-Michaelchuck, to clean-720-to-1080-to-1080, to take a podium 3rd and move up seven places to the TTR World Nr 7 position.

Torah Bright (AUS) pulled off a killing lead with her first run, dropping a smoothly executed backside 540 melon, air-to-fakie, Cab 720 melon to frontside 540, completing with a backside 360 Indy, to win the event title for the second year in a row. ‘Bright’s run shows the evolvement of women’s snowboarding through increasing technicality with good amplitude,’ stated the judging panel. Adding 850 TTR Ranking Points to her score, Bright (AUS) jumped up three spots in the Women’s TTR Top 10 to land at TTR World Nr 3 spot, just 9.58 points behind World Nr 2, Cheryl Maas (NED).

Soko Yamokao (JAP) beat Kelly Clark (USA) into 3rd place by just one point, as she hauled all-out in her third and final run, deservedly finishing 2nd. Her fifth TTR result of the season, Clark (USA) only added to her TTR Ranking Points and moved up from World Nr 12 to TTR World Nr 7.

‘This was the best contest in all five years of the World Superpipe Championships. With the biggest riders’ field so far, including a great international turn-out, Shaun White still proved he’s the man.’ stated Don Bostick, Chief of Competition.

Anticipation grows as the Tour edges closer to announcing the TTR World Snowboard Tour Champions 06/07. With less than a week to go before the Men’s Tour Champion is crowned at SIX(6)STAR Burton US Open, all eyes will be on the TTR Top 10 Ranking List presented by Swatch.
