Vans Penken Park Opening, January 2009.

In January 2009 the Vans Panken Park, which we at Onboard are stoked to be partners with, will open the season in Mayrhofen for the second time with a big event: the Groms Open Snowboarding Championship.

During one week one of the biggest parks in Europe will be put to the acid test by Vans team riders and friends before they head on to check out the party qualities in the beautiful Zillertal.

Winter is awaited feverishly in the well know Vans Penken Park that has, due to its clearly differentiated lines and its halfpipe, become a major meeting point for the international shred scene. The performance of the Penken Park is known as a standard throughout Europe. Check out highlights from last year’s Wängl Tängl held there for an idea of what can go down.

With the support of the Mayrhofner lift company and the tourism, between the 3rd and 10th of January the major snowboard- and lifestyle media will be invited to check out the freshly shaped park and share their passion for snow with us and the likes of Tobias Strauss, Cheryl Maas, Tyler Chorlton and many more.

Kick off for the opening will be the Hotzone / The Seeker Groms Open on 3rd of January. For the second time now this rookie challenge is held in cooperation with The Seeker boardshop in Mayrhofen. According to head shaper Stefan Plattner it is very important that kids have a proper park for their contests as well. That should be reason enough for all under-18s to rock the park big time! Up for grabs is a nice Vans set up consisting of snowboard outerwear and boots and tons of goodies. In the evening the Disco Dog DJs from Cologne will provide hot tunes to get the infamous party in Scotty’s started.

And as a very special New Year’s gift the park provides a freshly shaped, 8 meters high and 18 metres wide Red Bull Quarterpipe.

The week is dedicated to all those, who want to get to know the pro snowboarders behind their goggles and the writers behind the magazines.
