When: Sun 3rd of February 2008
Where: Bolsterlang, Germany
After a long wait and much anticipation we can finally give you the first report from the first event of the Suzuki 'Wir Schanzen' Tour which happened on Sunday the 3rd of February. The event was held at a really cool chill resort located in Bolsterlang, Germany.
The event was actually planned for Saturday the 2nd, but due to heavy snowfall the organizers decided to postpone it till Sunday. This decision turned out to be a brilliant one, as the Day of the Sun, really did bring sun and blue sky's presenting the riders with perfect conditions to push themselves and their peers. The park setup experienced a complete make over and awaited the riders with a big booter with two different kicks to jump off of followed by various boxes and a corner at the bottom of the course.
The works started at about 10.20 am with qualifiers, where the kicker and corner were getting worked with very technical tricks from the riders. The finals started at around 1 pm and saw an very high level of riding from all contestants. In the end it was Germany's own Friedl May, who with his smooth and technical riding, was able to convince the judges to award him the first place. Steffi Harmann was the glorious winner from the females. More and more young kids are starting to show up at such events. Therefore, it was no surprise that the contest also included a junior/kids group of riders where little Nico Lerchenfeld snatched 1st. Those little ones always get so exciting and stoked, which is in my mind the best thing for snowboarding. Because, as someone much wiser than I once said that the future lies in the hands of the children. True that!
The orgnizers had one more trick up their sleeve though. At around 2 pm, everyone got invited to try and break the world record in sliding a rail. A rail of 70 meters (WHAT!?) was built up as the obstacle with which one could try and beat the previous record of 57.5 meters. Many tried and many failed till a man named Marcel Rieder 50-50ied the monster and managed to slide an increadible 68.1 meters! A little less than two more meters and he would've cleared the whole freakin' thing! Needless to say that the spectators went ape shit. The next tour stop of 'Wir Schanzen' will be in the Kleinwalsertal on the 16th of February. So if you missed the inauguration, do come for sloppy seconds!
