The World Championships of Snowboarding 2016 is going down in Yabuli, China, and you can watch the live stream right here.
Early Sunday morning Euro side we saw Peetu Piiroinen get back to winning ways by taking out the men’s Big Air title stomping a back 1440 on his last hit, while Jamie Anderson continued her crazy winning streak to win the women’s Big Air crown on the wind-affected jump.
There was a bit of understandable controversy when Kyle Mack bumped Roope Tonteri and Chas Guldemond out of the podium spots by landing his back 14 triple, yet he was only able to find the double knee grab. To be fair to Kyle he looked as surprised as anyone when his score dropped. The judges might need to go to Specsavers after that clanger. We must also give props to Laurie Blouin who raced out front after the first of her three jumps with a huge Cab double underflip scoring 95.4 points, but a nasty looking slam on her final jump put paid to her podium aspirations.
There was bad news for the pipe riders, though, when it transpired that the Superpipe simply wasn’t up to scratch and the event had to be cancelled, with a pipe expression session pencilled in . The latest to come through the Great Firewall on the WST site was this: “We have had major issues with the resort’s pipe and park building machinery – but this may have been solved with additional machines being shipped in today from all over China. These delays are unfortunate but were not the build team’s fault in any way as they are working with machines which are not the ones specified for the job and with limited resources to do onsite repairs.”
Rich Hegarty of the WST managed to get an email through to explain further: “The Pipe had to be cancelled due to conditions and a lot of factors in the build up which made the pipe very difficult to get perfect before the Pipe qualifications. There will be a pipe ‘Expression Session’ with Shaun and a lot of the riders for Chinese TV and filming on the past day as a compromise.”
