When: Sat 26th of April 2008
Where: Mammoth, USA
This year’s event featured a $40,000 cash purse, a live webcast on the volcom site, free food and of course, a ton of prizes! In addition to this, Oren Tanzer, Chris Zajec and the rest of the Mammoth Unbound crew once again put together a first rate PBRJ Champs contest site! Consisting of a 30ft down-lift-tower, a 6ft high flat rail and a monstrous up-flat-down-flat-down box monstrosity! Needless to say, this was more then enough to challenge even the most seasoned PBRJ veteran!
The North American tour went from coast to coast, across state lines and country borders. Over the past 5 months we’ve had the opportunity to meet and ride with some of the best amateur snowboarders out there. Each weekend we’ve spent time with up-and-coming riders from different areas and only the best of these qualified for the 2008 PBRJ Championships! Looking back on the tour, it really was cool to witness each region’s riding style and the bag of tricks that go along with it. The best part is, at the end of the day we get to watch the best amateur riders all throw down at the same place and at the same time. In-tents! Upping the ante, the top 4 European Peanut Butter and Rail Jammers flew across the pond to battle it out with their North American counterparts for a slice of the $40,000 cash purse!
Putting their judging hats on were Volcom’s own Billy Anderson, Ryan Boyes and team riders Zac Marben and Elena Hight!
The 15 & Under Division kicked off this year’s Championships with a venerable display of riding prowess that won’t soon be forgotten! With names such as Alex Sarrazin, Sawyer Dean, Pierce Mimura, Griffin Siebert etc, etc, etc, we knew we were in for a show! It seemed as though hammers started flying even before the 1st heat did! The judges were hard-pressed to keep up with the action as just about every trick and its combinations went down in short order! Great show boys!
The 16 & Over Division had the unenviable task of following up the aforementioned mayhem with more then a little of their own! It really is amazing to see the level riders can elevate their shredding to when they have incentive! These guys wasted no time getting into it as the three custom PBRJ features were systematically destroyed with robot-like precision!
The Girls Division was up next and Elena Hight hopped into her judging seat and started administering scores to deserving femme-shreds! It seems like I say this all the time, but the girl’s division has been making some serious moves the past few years and it was insane to see the best of the best throw down together! Familiar faces were all over the place and I just couldn’t believe the tricks that were being nailed with apparent ease!
The Open Division rounded out the day’s ripping with a show that still has people shaking their heads around here! These three heats were packed full of the gnarliest amateur rippers out there and riders like Johnnty Lazz, Tyler Flanagan, Dylan Alito and Julien Beaulieu didn’t let us forget it for a second! To give you an idea how close it was, the top 5 scores were separated by less then 4 points!
A big shoutout to Oren Tanzer, Chris Zajec and everyone else at Mammoth Mountain for all their hard work and dedication to the PBRJ series.
