The last weekend of the season in the Vans Penken Park. The spring conditions are quickly transforming the snow from its solid to liquid state and the finely sculpted obstacles are singing their end-of-season swansong. With the park heading for the junk trunk till next winter, when it will once again rise like an anti-phoenix from the early season dumps, Vans and Onboard decided to see out the winter in style and reward those who’d ditched the option of a cheap charter flight to the beach with a mellow session that saw cash and gear up for grabs.

James Carr.

Though the nuclear weather that the Penken had been enjoying of late turned out to be more greybird for most of the day, Stefan the park shaper had taken our suggestion of a highest ollie contest and ran with it, producing a kicker of Olympian potential… in the fact that the Olympics features high jumping. Snowboarding + high jump = genius. After an aborted hip session, we quickly set up shop on the high jump and, with the Disco Dogs providing the beats and Tom Kingsnorth and Friedl Kolar the banter, those who felt like having a pop at showing their pop got popping. Those that didn’t? Well, they were able to get their laughing gear round the endless supply of Vans Waffles at the Grillhof Alm and for those lucky enough to have a number on their waffle stick… well, there was a bunch of free goodness from Vans and Onboard to be raffled off.

König and Carr splitting the best trick cash.

First up, we quite literally set the bar at 2.40m and called a bunch of tricks with the first shredder performing it to our satisfaction being remunerated with cold hard Eurodoller. Then it was time for the best trick, which proved pretty tricksy to get over the bar while performing cunning stunts. Props must go to the lunatic shaper who went for a back rodeo 7 and ended up missing the landing and slamming flat on his back from a good 8 metres. Thankfully when he regained his senses he was only winded. A bunch of guys were pulling Crails, backflips, Methods and backside 180s, but it was the diminutive English duo of James Carr and Billie Neilson who were stepping up to 5s and 7s, though keeping it together and getting over the bar was proving difficult. James poked out a mean front 3, got over and rode away clean and looked to have bagged the cash, but local Peter König stopped styling methods for the photos for one run and got over with a backside 3 tucknee indy meaning PK and Jimmy Carr split the cash.

The Waffle raffle.

Then it was on to the Junk&Funk’s blue ribband event – the high jump. From 2.40m until 2.80m most of the people were making it over with only a few dropping out, one managing to knock the Onboard Ed in Chief Danny off the side of the jump. But above 2.80 the contestants were rapidly whittled down – thankfully, as we were beginning to worry that we’d run out of notches. It came down to the two riders that had shown the maddest pop and technique all day – Carr and König once more – and the last notch on our high jump-ometer at 3.20m. Both knocked the bar off on their first attempt and had to hike back for round 2. With König coming a cropper again it was eyes on James and, sucking his knees up for all they’re worth, got up, over and, though the bar got bonked, it stayed on to see him take the money and prepare for an evening of debauchery.

PK takes on the hip.

And debauched Scotties certainly was when the Disco Dogs dropped the Funk, Vans and Onboard dropped the Cuba Libres and all and sundry took advantage of the bar’s last night to get proper lairy. See you there next year for the Junk&Funk Mark II – The Trash&Thrash.

The Disco Dogs – droppers of fine beats and wearers of mustaches.
