The Popcorn Wallride

When: Sun 20th of April 2008

Where: Saas Fee, Switzerland

Crappy weather, crappy pic….Sorry for this!

Sunday, April 20th saw the fifth edition of the infamous ‘Popcorn Wallride’ contest, which followed the ‘Snickers Classic’. Unfortunately, the weather was not as epic as in the previous days, and it seemed as though most of the pro-shreds were all worked from the slopestyle contest. This however presented an opportunity for young and upcoming riders to draw attention to themselves, and sure enough many young guns stepped up making use of the occasion!

The night before was supposed to be the big Saturday night party, but I had a different plan. I once again had the pleasure of eating dinner with Peter Ström and Marika (his girlfriend/organizer of the Battle!), where we talked about how to make the perfect omelette, the good ol’ days and concocted a plan to make it an early night. Why you ask? The wallride comp was supposed to start at 11 am the next day, meaning we would have time to go shred some pow before!!! It’s not everyday that one has the pleasure of sharing some runs with a pro! I was stoked to say the least!

Coming to the Wallride comp; the conditions proved to be a little bit more difficult for the riders than in previous years, as it was difficult to get enough speed and maintain it through the tranny. Many riders ended up barely making it past the half-way line, but as in all things, there were a few exceptions. Swiss Denis Supersaxo claimed the win with a superstylish handplant all the way at the top and a nosebonk that followed, who was closely followed by Christian Weber who did super huge nosepresses almost at the top. In third came Belgium’s Seppe Smits, who was tailed by Argentinian Facundo Fernandez.

To his own surprise it was little Seppe Smits who claimed the overall ‘King of Popcorn’ title for the weekend, as the ‘Snickers Classic and Popcorn Wallride’ are to be seen as one event. Seppe was riding consistantly and strong for all three of the competition days placing 4th in the slopestyle contest and third at the wallride. He was crowned, got a cape, a crown, cash and a finishing shower of popcorn from Popcorn chief Robbi!

1. Denis Supersaxo
2. Christian Weber
3. Seppe Smits

Overall winner:
Seppe Smits aka ‘King of Popcorn’

Once again, props to Robbi and Daniela for the good times, and a special thank you to Peter Ström and Marika for being the people they are, and shredding the pow with me!!! I will charish those memories forever!

Video coming soon!
