When: Sat 5th of April 2008
Where: Stuben, Austria
Last weekend, Stuben at Arlberg awaited 310 participants that had signed up for the 9th edition of the Longboard Classic, with open arms and a ridiculous amount of snow. When writing ridiculous, we mean the 4 meters of snow that were on the mountain and the 2 meters down in the valley. When asked, the locals reported that there hasn't been so much snow in the beginning of April in decades. The perfect conditions for a roots event such as this one!
The first contestants congregated at the Hotel 'Post' late Friday afternoon, to meet and greet and shoot the shit about shredding and anything else that came to mind. Everyone took it easy and laid off excessive boozing, as everyone wanted to be fit and pull an early bird on Saturday. The contest was scheduled to commence at around noon, giving the soul shredheads enough time in the morning to go perform some powder slashers and such only for themselves. When noon came around the 310 contestants divided up into the categories: Oldschoolers (60), Males (200) and Women (50), were summoned to the infamous Albona Ridge. Usually the contest begins with 300 hundred meter dash to the starting line where you then have to strap into your antique rig and shoot down the 1001 meters of vertical. This year, considering how much snow was around, it was decided to shorten the dash to 50 meters. The organizers didn't want to see people dropping off right at the beginning! Hehe.
The Oldschoolers got to give it the first go, and what a go it was. Crazy Banana's, old Burton 'Cruzers', Kempers and old Sims models were ripping up the face with style and grace. They were followed by the women who were then followed by the 200 man strong male contigent. That atmosphere was amazing as everyone cheered on each other and love was being spread left and right for the riders. There are not that many contests around where each and every rider gets mad props at the finishing line, no matter how their performance was. EPIC! Dani 'Kiwi' Meier and Paul Gruber facilitated the good vibes by doing an extraordinary job as the contest MC's, and had the crowd laughing their asses off. The stand-out's of the day were Sigi Reinsbach who, with his 61 years of age, was the oldest soul brotha on the mountain, and Jim Magnusson who rocked down the face with a guitar and mini amp in hand covering AC/DC!
After the awards were given out, which was more than plenty, it was time to go get intoxicated in the 'Mondschein' bar, where the Roots Rocker Soundsystem transformed the rather rustic venue into a dancing mayhem. The plugs were pulled at around 3 am in the morning, but the poeple wanted more! The jam continued in the parking lot outside, with more music, ladies dancing on car hubs and good vibes. Next year will mark the ten year anniversary of the event, and will definitely be one of next season's must-go's.
