Stylewars wrap-up

When: Fri 24th of August 2007

Where: Fall Creek, Australia

Gotta love them Aussie shezzas

Words and photos: Alex Roberts.

Alrighty, this year’s Stylewars is all wrapped up after an epic 3 days of competition and no prizes went out for guessing who would take the title. Yep, Torstein Horgmo took out the Grandmaster (overall winner) and One Hitter (best trick) titles last night at the Silver Ski Lodge here in Falls Creek. To quote Event Organiser Richard Heggarty “It was a tough one to name the Best Trick as there were five to choose from, but they were all Torstein’s anyway!”. The 19 year old Norwegian adding to his Rail Best Trick title from the night before, and collecting another two Stylewars necklaces to keep him blinged out.

More bright and sunny weather was on order for the last day of competition which was a mellow one compared to Wednesday’s efforts on the big booter. Just the smaller 3 kicker line was being hit and the judged session was split in half, with the first half being for the best technical run, and the second for pure style with nothing more than a 540 counting towards the rider’s points total. It was great to see the riders hitting the kickers and going for style and variety with some big tweaks, they looked to be enjoying the fun of not having to spin-to-win.

Something that I haven’t mentioned so far is the side competition going on here during Stylewars between the Aussies and Kiwis. The Bleedonsnow is a snowboarder’s take on the traditional Bledisloe Cup Rugby Union competition between Australia and New Zealand. Here it meant that the total score from the top 5 riders from each country giving a finals team score. After much debate between the judges the Aussies just edged it, not with out controversy though. The Kiwis had better individual scores as more of them hit the big booter, but overall the Aussies took the title leaving the Kiwis with nothing but the wooden spoon.

Bleedonsnow bragging rights

To wrap up, this week has been a great success for Richard and his team. The Falls Creek people being excellent hosts, always happy to help and making this competition such a unique and killer event. The park was in great shape, the Silver Ski Lodge an awesome (and forgiving) base, the riders killed it, and the music has been sick too. The weather also helped to make everything work so well with sun all week long until today, the morning after. I must confess I was glad to see the rain when I woke up as my head was bangin’ and it meant I could stay inside guilt free.

So Thanks to the Stylewars crew, Falls Creek, all the sponsors, and the riders for stepping up. I’m already looking forward to next year!

And as before, check for more info.
