Stale Sandbech wins 2015 Air & Style Innsbruck – Recap & Gallery

What a day it’s been at the Bergisel Schanze in Innsbruck for the 21st edition of the Air & Style – most certainly it was one for the books!

Although the weather gods couldn’t be bothered to send over some bluebird for this prestigious contest (the final was held in a near-blizzard), it didn’t stop the riders from tearing the kicker a new one, nor the crowd from going mental in their usual Tirol-style. The qualifications on Friday made it clear that the riders were motivated to give their all – triples and 1440s were thrown down as if it were no biggie.

The event started out with Bud Keene’s heated rail jam, that saw the likes of Ethan Morgan, Raffi Kossmann, Ziga Rakovec and homies, but in the end it was Marvin Salmina whose mellow style impressed the most and cashed the 500€ cheque.

Then followed the main contest and straight from the beginning, it was ON – Eric Willet’s presentation run being a frontside 1080 and Ståle showed us how to make time stop with a super lengthy Cab 900.

The first rounds were gripping and heat after heat, the crowd was fed with insane tricks – we’re still dreaming of Niklas Mattson’s backside 1260 Japan and are trying to forget the fact that he unfortunately didn’t land it. In the end, the top four were Ståle Sandbech, Yuki Kadono, Peetu Piiroinen and Sebastien Toutant, who were to battle it out in the finals.

Right from his first run Ståle set the bar high with a backside triple cork 1440 indy that scored him a whooping 44.76 points – the highest result of the whole finals. Though the heavy snowfall gave him a bit of trouble on his second run, he came back with a hammer in his third run, a frontside 1080. After a couple times of falling short of the top step of the podium, the Norwegian could finally bag his first Air & Style gold. He got to go home with the lion’s share of the 100,000$ prize money, a brand new car and a ticket to the Air & Style final tour stop in Los Angeles. Not bad, Ståle!

Silent killer Peetu was on point with a mean backside 1260 mute in his first, and a cab 1260, spiced up with a double grab, in his third run, thus securing him second place with a score of 79.39.

Yuki Kadono, who flew all the way over from Japan didn’t mess around left the crowd amped by his insane backside 1620. Thanks to the 1260 he threw down on his third run, he managed to score 72.22 points and snag third place.

Canadian ripper Sebastien Toutant was having a tough time of it and couldn’t quite land the frontside double cork 1080 in his first two runs. For his third try, he switched to a backside double rodeo 1260 double grab and ended up with a total of 43.76 points.

The 21st edition of the Air & Style Innsbruck was on the whole pretty sick, and it’s great to see riders’ style starting to show through now on the inevitable assault of technical double- and triple corking spins. Shoutouts to Ståle, Sage, Mattsson, Hedberg, Thorgren amongst other for pushing it.

The third and final stop of this season’s Air & Style tour will take place in Los Angeles February 21st and 22nd. Some wizard decided to include skiplanking there, but that aside we’re looking forward to more of the same please!
