Reira Iwabuchi and Mons Roisland Win Copper Mountain Big Air

Fed up of inner-city scaffolding? The Copper Mountain event was the first World Cup Big Air stop to take place on the real stuff, and we saw yet another fresh face taking the win in both the men’s and women’s events.

Thanks to a monster backside 1080 on her final run, 15-year-old Reira Iwabuchi was the surprise winner in a field that included Hailey Langland, Enni Rukajarvi and Jamie Anderson. Her landing on that one wasn’t the cleanest, but it was enough to put her on top when combined with the score for her much cleaner cab 9.

Reigning X Games slopestyle champ Julia Marino put down a cab double underflip that earned her the biggest score out of all the podium runs, but her third hit – a front 7 that barely cleared the knuckle – prevented her from beating Iwabuchi. Rounding out the top three was Norway’s Silje Norendal, making her first appearance on the steps this season with a combination of cab 900 and backside 720.

Meanwhile it was Mons Roisland (recently voted by his fellow riders as one of the finest young Euro talents around) topping the podium, beating the strong local contingent to the win with a switch backside 1620 and frontside 1440.

Chris Corning and Chandler Hunt took second and third, both of whom stuck backside triple 14s, with Max Parrot only just sneaking 5th place in his first World Cup event of the winter. Anyone hopingh to see a Corning quad cork in competition will have to wait a little longer, but he certainly looks like he’s got the airtime for it. If he went any bigger, he’d run out of landing.

That’s it from the World Cup series until the final event in Quebec in March 2018. Before then, however, there’s the small matter of the Olympics.
