Pyrénées Circus 2017: A French Renaissance?

The results and gallery of the Pyrénées Circus 2017 – it’s right here, right now…

What a refreshing weekend we had in the Pyrénées! Powder in the morning, and in the afternoons we witnessed creative shredding from the young generation of French riders – some of them being only 16 years old, like Juan Cachat who killed it through the session… What else? Indeed, this first edition of the Pyrenees Circus, the only WST event in France this year, was not only blessed by pretty epic conditions (well, in between two storms at least), but it also witnessed a kind of rebirth of the French scene as the young bucks in attendance showed a refreshing mix of skills and motivation, and that’s probably the most positive thing we took from this weekend in the pastoral village of Saint-Lary. A big change from the usual all Scandi line-up on most WST contests.

Thursday was the first day of riding on the circus-inspired set up shaped by Ho5 – and Matière Blanche for the Electric Shred Zone, and it was a banger: blue skies, happy faces and some high flying over the main kicker. Martin De Pasquale illustrated well what is like to earn the title of ‘Rider of the Day’. Then the weather decided to play some tricks as well and shut down the whole Friday as wind was blowing furiously. But that was all to prepare an epic Saturday morning, when riders, organisers and media alike scored some epic lines in the incredible Saint-Lary backcountry.

It was then time for the final part of the event, with the Jam Session over the Circus set up consisting in a hip, a butter table, a medium booter next to a big fat tabletop (18m), and the Shred Zone devoted to the Electric Cash 4 Tricks right after the main contest.

Franck Moissonnier the head judge had a lot to work with as the wind – and the inrun speed – was not really allowing the riders to fly high over the main jump like 2 days before. He then decided to reward style, technicality but also variety on the features. What a pleasure to see so many young Frenchies on this French event, most of them being under 21: Tim Baisamy, Thomas Delavigerie, Enzo Valax, Paul Veron, Jof Marcou, Yannis Tourki, Matthis Bozzolo, Juan Cachat and the girls as well with Luan Salgiera, Marion Gouwy and Lola Abou.

And beyond the best trick from Axel Ransinangue (cork 7), or the most creative line from Benoit Thomas-Javid (frontflip to backflip), we’ll give a special shout out to Yannick Boudgelal for attempting a Double Back on his first run on the main jump (pretty ballsy), to Sacha Balicco for keeping the spirit alive after injurying his foot, and to Martin De Pasquale for his overall motivation and skills. Talking about motivation, it was really pleasing to see riders walking back up for the next run, like the good old days! Props to that, and also to the organisers who managed to pull this event out (with good parties too with Musique d’Apéritif, Wedding, Pace and Yuksek) when everybody know how difficult it can be to make such a thing happen in France at the moment – maybe we should start thinking about that more seriously, by the way. ‘We’, as a community. Just sayin!
