Pleasure Jam

When: Thu 1st of January 1970

Where: Dachstein and Schladming

The fourth Pleasure Jam, which was the destination of thousands of european snowboarders last weekend, became a full-on sucess one more time! Just in time for the main event on saturday, the snowclouds split and the stars of the European freestyle-scene showed the enthusiastic audience what they can in an impressive way!

This years Pleasure Jam began with strong snowfalls on thursday and during the night to friday, which covered the sick eventsetup – built by Bernd Mandlberger and his crew – under a thick layer of snow. The bad weather unfortunately lasted till friday afternoon. For that reason the qualification had to be cancelled finally after being postponed for a few times. Still most of the riders that travelled to Dachstein for the competition were not really disappointed. They started a motivated session on the jibs and the smaller jumps and as if the weather aimed on rewarding them, the wind got weaker and the first rays of sunshine made their way into the Burton Superpark. In the end some 500 riders had a decent session in sunshine and a perfect park – this kept the expectations for the pro-comp on Saturday high!

One more sticking point was Friday’s party in the “Hofbauerstollen”, where one could meet almost every well-known face of European snowboarding. Most of the party people found their way into bed way after the first morning light.

Still, getting up early was important for the ones competing. The weather was good in the morning but the forecast said it’s gonna be more windy and cloudy in the afternoon again.

The jam session of the pros started shortly after 10 o’clock for that reason, which happened to be a wise decision, because the weather forecast became reality later on. The riding-level of the invited pros was impressive and caused impetuous discussions on the judging table. It’s hard to find the best one, when all competitors are rocking as if there was no tomorrow!

In the end it was Nicky Wieveg from sweden and Cheryl Maas from the Netherlands who won the overall titles once again, despite of the superstrong other competitors. Nicky and Cheryl seem to like Dachstein very much and showed a strong and versatile performance. The title “best trick” went to Austria and in the hands of Chris Kröll, while Stefan Wimmer, also Austrian, was chosen to be the best rookie!

But what makes the Pleasure Jam so special besides the competition is the fact that thousands of motivated shredders travel to Dachstein to give their own season a worthy kickoff every year on that day. No matter if the riding happens with their own equipment or brand new stuff from the snowboard brands, which could be tested for free, the session was too good to let pass by! All obstacles were under permanent fire and when the queue at the lift got too long hundreds of shredders hiked the rails and kickers.

DJ Berg and DJ Junior gave the whole thing a hiphoppy touch, which was completed by the funny live-freestyle performance of Mc Licks, who made the croud even more happy!

Perfectly fitting to that was the Fiat Best Trick Session on the big A-Framebox. Everyone could take part and the judges chose the best boy and the best girl after one hour. Renè Schnoeller from Austria didn’t let this opportunity pass by, as well as Basa Stevulova from Slovakia, who declassated the other girls without any troubles.

After all this, smiling faces on the party scene were the theme of Saturday evening. This time the partying happened in the “Marias” and the “Sonderbar”, which already saw a lot of intensive Pleasure Jam parties.

The night was long and it already started to rain in the valley and snow on the mountain during the darkness, so most people were not really disappointed when the gondola couldn’t work on sunday, because the wind was simply too strong.

Big thanks to the sponsors Fiat Freestyle Team, Salomon and Dachstein. More info on:
