Mans Hedberg leads first round of Air & Style

After a one year break, the Air & Style is finally back in Innsbruck for its 21st edition and judging by the heavy riding of the qualifications, headed up by Swedish ripper Mans Hedberg, we’ll be in for a treat in the finals.

Once again, 24 of the world’s best riders gathered to battle it out for the Ring of Glory on the infamous Bergisel jump. This year, the qualifications were open to the public: the kids to be more precise – children under 14 got a free ticket to cheer for their heroes.

Fired up by the motivated crowd, the riders went through three open rounds where the top 16 qualified for the main event on Saturday. The judging system got switched up a bit, meaning that every run gets 50 points max (40 points tech, 10 points style) and the two best runs per round will be added up to a total of 100 points.

In the end, it was Mans Hedberg, who scored a whopping 38.39 on his first run with a backside double cork 1080 and 42.46 – the highest score of the night – on his second by throwing down a whoppercock switch back 1260, pumping his overall score to 80.85.

Silent slayer Peetu Piiroinen was impressive as ever with his two switch runs: cab 1260 and switch back 1080, netting him second place with a total score of 77.42.

Not far behind was 17-year-old Kyle Mack, who flew in from the US: his huge frontside 1260 and a backside double cork 1080 grabbing Japan secured him third place at 74.95 points.

Emil Ulsletten, who recently won the Air & Style Beijing edition with a switch backside triple cork 1440 made it to 5th place thanks to a switch backside double cork 1080 way deep and a frontside double rodeo 1080.

Tomorrow, Saturday, the finals will see the good ol’ Air & Style format of two duelling athletes with the four top contestants fighting for the trophy in the super finale. In addition to the main comp, there’s also the Bud Keene rail contest in the afternoon and several live acts in between the heats to warm up the crowd and keep spirits high.

And remember, if you can’t make it out to Innsbruck to get your gawp on, make sure you tune in to the live stream right here on our website.
