Grouse Mountain welcomed big crowds and the best professional and amateur Canadian riders this past weekend for the Swatch TTR 3-Star Quiksilver Showdown Over the City. Up for the taking were cash and prizes totaling $20 000 CDN along with 550 TTR ranking points. Canadian shredder Kevin Griffen claimed the Men’s Title, with fellow rippers Matt Belzile and Charles Reid taking second and third respectively. Terri Dreger also grabbed hold of women’s first place followed by Robin Van Gyn in second, and Stephanie Just in third.
Despite unseasonably cold and snowy conditions, this year’s event doubled its competitor list. Sub-zero temperatures and some occasional high winds didn’t stop some of the best riders, both locally and internationally, from coming out to compete. “We are really happy with the participation this year,” said Jeff Silcock, Events Manager at Grouse Mountain. “Being selected by the Swatch TTR World Tour certainly raised the caliber of this event. It was a rare opportunity to showcase this level of talent in Vancouver.”
And the riding caliber certainly was high with the top placing snowboarders destroying the Slopestyle set up that boasted a 75 foot step down jump into a 20 foot gap and a huge 40 foot down box. First place finisher Kevin Griffen lit up the city with runs that included a BS 900 Tail, a Cab 5 Japan, a Cab 7 Tail, a FS 7 Tail, BS 7 Indy and an always stylish BS 180 Melon. Matt Belzile who placed second stomped big spins that included a BS 10 and a Cab 9.
Swatch TTR World No. 21 Charles Reid, who also placed third in the US Open Slopestyle, rounded out the Showdown podium with a sick switch BS 9 and his own 1080 rendition. Women’s first place competitor Terri Dreger took it home with a sick BS 3 as ‘riders choice’ competitor Seb Toutant, who now sits at TTR No. 71, placed 4th in the men’s field with an insane BS 1080 cork.
