Burton European Open 2014 – Slopestyle Semis

The focus of yesterday’s action at the 2014 Burton European Open presented by MINI was the sick new Slopestyle course where both the Women’s and Men’s Semi-finals got under way. The visibility may have been tough but it didn’t discourage the international field from throwing hammers. Swiss rider Isabel Derungs topped the list of 6 girls to progress into tomorrow’s finals, while 21-year-old Norwegian Brage Richenberg earned first place in the Men’s contest.

14 Women were competing for 6 coveted spots in Saturday’s Slopestyle final and the going was never going to be easy with the likes of Enni Rukajärvi (FIN) and Isabel Derungs (SUI) in the mix. But it was Merika Enne (FIN), with a very strong showing on the rails and kickers that progressed had her in first place after Run 1, followed by Enni Rukajärvi and Isabel Derungs. Going into the second round the top six spots remained secure with Celia Petrig and her massive frontflip nose grabs just missing the cut in 7th. The only real changeup came when Isabel unseated Merika by upping her second hit rotation to a 7.

The start of the Men’s contest was delayed due to the new snow and light conditions. But after a half hour training session and an agreement with the judges that both the small and big line would be scored equally, the contest got underway  .

Alek Oestreng (NOR), the 2012 Slopestyle champ, was a favourite to win these Semis but after two runs it was fellow countryman Brage Richenberg who topped the charts and earned the right to drop last in tomorrow’s 16 man finals. Sandwiched between these two Norsemen was the peoples’ champion American rider Seth Hill.

Sam Hulberg (USA) had the most nail-biting wait of the Semi’s, as sitting on the bubble in 10th place there were three riders who could bump him out. Janne Korpi (FIN), who after scrubbing his first run was hanging at the bottom of the table, landed a sweet medley of rail tricks, a 10 and two 9s to slip into 5th place. Sam need not have stressed though in the end as due to the challenging conditions it was decided at a riders meeting to have a 16-men final rather than 10, in which each rider would have 2 runs (instead of 3) – the best of which counts.

The stage is now set for the Men’s and Women’s Slopestyle finals tomorrow and with a promise of improving weather it is going to be yet another epic day of snowboarding.
