Absolut Park Spring Battle 2007 Snowboard

When: Sat 31st of March 2007

Where: Flachauwinkl, Austria

What an action weekend in Flachauwinkl! A weekend of superlatives and snowboard, skate and party sessions! The official 3 Star TTR contest had to be postponed from Saturday to Sunday. The reason was the bad visibility which made it impossible to clear the biggest Spring Battle Jam Kicker ever without any risk. What happened next was a Best Trick Session at the Special Obstacle, an awesome Skate Session in the local indoor miniramp and a Spring Break Party marathon with the band No Opinion within the Quik Sessions (by Quiksilver) and the Roots Rockers Sound System. The official snowboard event could finally be held on Sunday. Here’s what went down…

Saturday, March 31, Snowboard Contest part 1

As predicted, we had fog and choppy wind on Saturday. Organisers instantly recognized that it would be too dangerous to hit the Jam Kicker with a height of 5 meters and a 22 meter table for a qualification under these conditions. The organisers and the TTR representatives shortly decided to do a Best Trick Session at the last three obstacles. The main contest was postponed to Sunday.

Atomic, the sponsor, offered Euro 600 prize money for the rider who did the best trick at the combination – consisting of Tree Bonk/ Wallride/Corner. Due to the highly motivated riders there were six shredders in the end who shared the prize money: Fips Gruber with a transfer to backside lipslide 180 out, Herby Thaler with a frontside 540 transfer, Danny Larsen with Andrecht handplant to fakie at the Wallride and Mone Monsberger with a fastplant at the Wallride. Wolle Beer also took the Wallride and performed a cab 270 to 50-50 backside 270 off whereas Marc Swoboda impressed with an awesome handplant nosegrab at the Wallride.

After the contest they all met in the Chillhouse located at the valley station of the new park shuttle for an after-shred skate session where Steve Gruber, Mone Monsberger and Chris Perzival were performing spectacular tricks.

Saturday, Spring Break Party

Traditionally, the party is one of the best parts of the Spring Battle and to keep this tradition despite the postponed contests, the qualification runs started only at 13:00. Enough time to get back on your feet after a long party night. And we got what we wanted. Ema’s Pub in Flachau was totally crowded although they had extended it with an extra tent. The locals and the contest participants have been rocking to the Quik Session of the No Opinions (by the way: the ex- Shredder Stefan Sulzgruber from Garmisch is the drummer of the band) and bouncing to the Tunes of the Roots Rockers Sound System until 5 in the morning!

Sunday, April 1 – Snowboard Contest Part 2- the TTR 3-Star Event.

“It was a good idea to postpone the contest to Sunday,” says Seppi Harml, in charge of the park and the organizer of the Absolut Park Spring Battle. And all the riders thought the same because on Sunday they had blue bird in the Absolut Park – only a few clouds every now and then. Just the wind led to a short interruption of the contest so only two runs were judged, rather than the planned three – but it was enough to get a proper ranking.

As mentioned before, the setup for the Absolut Park Spring Battle 07 consisted of a fat booter with massive airtime bigger than any other Spring Battle kicker before. The man in charge Seppi Harml grabbed a shovel until chief tester and shaper Herby Thaler gave his o.k. for the kicker. At the end of the course on the right they had a 6m Tree Bonk, a Wallride in the middle and a small Corner on the left – the riders had to face a choice. Once more the set-up was just perfect.

Everybody was having a good time – especially the 14 riders who qualified for the finals after their two runs. The just 15-year-old Seppe Smits from Belgium surprised the judges with a frontside 9 over the Jam Kicker. Some locals joined the rider field too – and we wouldn´t be surprised if we hear more about them in the near future: the two park shapers Herby Thaler and Fips Gruber, the winner of the Absolut Park Tour Robert Wallner, Roland Scharmer and Joschi Scharschl. Of course some international top riders also showed up like Matevz Pristavec, Ville Uotila, Lars Oesterle, Wolle Beer and Danny Larsen, the Austrian top rookies Marc Swoboda from Tulln, Martin Rasinger from Innsbruck, Lukas Perteneder and Mathias Gober.

But in the end Fips Gruber, Marc Swoboda and Ville Uotila made it to the podium. Fips Gruber (AUT) won Euro 900 prize money for his backside 5 nose grab over the Jam Kicker and his transfer lipslide at 3rd Obstacle. In his second run Fips landed his first double inverted 1080 in his life, and he was even more happy about that than winning the prize money. Marc Swoboda, who is in good shape (4th at Wängl Tängl 07) got second and was additionally awarded with the Atomic Creativity Award. He got the second best judging of the day for his stylish backside 7 japan at the Jam Kicker and his frontside 7 indy at the Corner. Ville Uotila from Finland received the winners check of Euro 1,500.

“Today was a perfect day for me as I won. I am so happy, I had a great time in Austria this week filming for four days in Kaprun and then winning the Absolut Park Spring Battle here in Flachauwinkl,” the smiling winner said who impressed the judges with a switch backside 7 and frontside 5 combination.

Finally we want to give our respect to the whole Absolut Park Crew for a perfect setup on the mountain, the great organisation and the generous rider and media hosting, which can be found at the Spring Battle every year. See you there next year!
