22nd Kaunertal Opening

Now in it’s 22nd year – yes, the opening has been going on for an insane stretch of 22 years! – last weekend saw another incarnation of the Kaunertal Opening. As I was driving up the tiny mountain road on Saturday there was bluebird wherever my eyes looked, I new that the day would be epic. I have always wanted to go but never had the time or the cash to make it and was totally stoked by the beauty of this valley. It consisted of the lake, the glacier, the surrounding mountains and the road, with its ridiculous 27 hairpin bends, which would make any hung over person feel like they are dying a thousand deaths. Oh yeah, before I forget. Do NOT drive drunk or under the influence in the Kaunertal! The chief of police is known to be a hard ass who loves to work on his arrest quota for the year during the opening. First thing I saw at the pay toll for the mountain road; a young dude in hand cuffs! Pretty shitty start for him into the weekend, that’s for sure.

Coming up to the top of the mountain one glanced upon a sea of big brand name stands where one could test out the newest products and decide on which to burn a couple of those green Euro bills. To add flavour, Dj’s were filling the airwaves with hip hop. UHHH!

The competition arena consisted of an icy, decently shaped Halfpipe and the BIG PARK mini shred course, which looked super fun. It consisted of a tree stump bonk, followed by a barrel bonk, then came a mini kicker, to a 3 m flat box, rounding it up with a mini spine. Soooo fun! The competition shreds got to shred the pipe and the mini shred course for about one and a half to two hours, while they were being judged. A lot of the riders disregarded the pipe, ignored what place they would rank and just killed the mini shred!

The infamous party tent was pulsating with Dancehall to Punk Rock on both nights, and people were going off for sure. The consequences were to be observed on Sunday, where everyone was taking it real easy on the mountain. Once again the opening was success, people were stoked, riders got back in their groove and the excitement for the upcoming winter was omnipresent.
