Winter has arrived in the Alps! And with it snow. Phat, fluffy, and deep. Bluebird skies, snow-capped mountains, steep runs and tempting outcrops are just some of the reasons why numerous people are flocking here to enjoy the white winter wonderland. This terrain has much to offer especially those with a passion for backcountry and off-piste shredding. The conditions couldn’t seem more perfect for those seeking fields of untouched powder. However to enjoy the snow to the fullest, proper know-how and training are essential.
risk´n´fun is a training program for freeriders that was created and organized by the Youth Section of the Austrian Alpine Association. risk´n´fun offers snowboarders, ages 16 and up, profound backcountry training based on three constitutive levels (1=Trainings Session, 2=Next Level, 3=Backcountry Pro). Three crucial factors run through all risk´n´fun sessions: realizing, judging and deciding. These factors serve a foundational base for content taught in all training levels and become a recurrent theme throughout all risk’n’fun sessions.
During this training program every participant will have the opportunity to design, access, and evaluate the risk that comes from riding outside marked slopes. With these exercises participants will be able to understand and develop their own personal powder strategy, which will help establish experience with future backcountry and off-piste trips. Professional coaches and mountain guides with long-term backcountry experience will accompany the young freeriders during these training sessions on and off the mountain providing important information about soft (prevention) and hard (response) skills.
risk´n´fun is expecting a great 10th season. Before its 10th anniversary is celebrated in Fieberbrunn near the end of March 2010, 12 locations in Austria and South Tyrol will host an extensive program starting with a Level 1 session from December 16-20, 2009 in Sölden. All in all 11 Level 1-3 trainings plus 2 specials can be attended by more than 200 freeriders. 8 mountain guides and 17 coaches possessing the same spirit and passion for freeriding as the participants will be accompanying this year’s risk´n´fun
