Quiksilver Showdown Over the City

The Quiksilver Showdown Over the City is drawing top snowboarders from across Canada, and as far as Australia and the United States to Vancouver this week with over 30 premier riders already registered to compete.

The close of the Burton US Open 2009 snowboarding competition last weekend has turned global focus on the SWATCH TTR World Snowboard Tour, the largest international snowboard contest body, to Grouse Mountain. With the event being a Men’s Only format and $20,000 cash on the line, big talent names such as teen phenom Seb Toutant – currently ranked # 9 on the TTR circuit after a second place finish in slopestyle at the US Open – are descending on Vancouver’s favourite playground to claim the cash prize and advance their standings.

“This is the all-star game of Canadian snowboarding,” says Jeff Silcock, events manager at Grouse Mountain. “The Quiksilver Showdown Over the City continues to grow each year and offers excitement for all ages to witness the progression of the local and Canadian snowboard talent.”

The prize money totals $20K for all competitions included in the two-day event. The weekend will kick off with qualifiers on Friday that will see up to 100 riders competing for the 8 qualifier spots. These 8 riders will then be invited to compete in the Friday Night Jib Session along with more than 30 invited pros. They will all be competing for a $3K winner takes all prize.

Saturday will be the main event where invited riders and the qualified riders will be competing for $17K in total in the Jump + Jib Session. With $10K for first place on the line, which will be decided in a 8-person head to head finals, riders will be taking snowboarding to the next level. Last year’s winner, Kevin Griffin will have his hands full to redeem the title, and hot on his tail will be last year’s runner up, Matt Belzile (Grouse Mountain Team rider).

This year’s course design will consist of one massive step down jump that will lead into a newly designed jib section, allowing both the jibbers and jumpers equal opportunity to show off their skills.

Other weekend festivities include an outdoor BBQ and beer garden next to the course, sponsor booths, demos, and amazing spring riding conditions. The Quiksilver Park at Grouse Mountain is a popular playground for both locals and top pros, and will be the scene for mesmerizing action throughout the event.

Accredited media please contact William Mbaho, public relations and communications manager at Grouse Mountain, in advance of the event to secure a weekend pass for access to venues and parties.
