A host of riders will be hurling themselves down the dangerous double black diamond terrain next month in a bid to win their share of a NZ$40,000 prize fund at the Marmot Extreme Skiing & Snowboarding Competition.
The competition will ruin from September 23-26 and will be held at The Pinnacles at New Zealand's Whakapapa Ski Area - one of the toughest snowboarding zones in the country.
As the only event of this kind on New Zealand's North Island, the Marmot Extreme Contest exceeded all expectations last year, and is set to be even bigger this year with the prize pool being second in New Zealand only to the NZ Burton Open.
“The in-bounds extreme terrain here at Mt. Ruapehu is insane," says operator Tim Wilkinson. "No other commercial ski area in New Zealand comes close to it for sheer challenging terrain, except maybe the Chutes at Treble Cone. We encourage skiers and boarders from New Zealand and around the world to come and try their luck at winning part of the NZ$40,000 prize pool."
The competition is open to anyone over 18 years old. Last year's competition featured entries from New Zealand, England, Australia, France, Canada, the U.S. and Switzerland. Athletes must pre-register online at www.mtruapehu.com/extremecomp as spots are limited.
