Willett Wins X Games Slopestyle Finals

When: 10.-12.03.2010

Where: Tignes, France

Luckily, conditions snow- and weather wise had improved significantly for today’s men’s slopestyle finals of the inaugural Winter X Games Europe in Tignes, France. Still, a lot of riders struggled with maintaining their speed over the eight obstacles – with seven of them curiously being medium-sized jumps. To quote from the ESPN broadcast: “We had some amazing runs, we had some shocking mistakes.” Stephan Maurer took the lead early on with a laid-back run starting with a Front 9 and ending on a Double Backflip no grab. He maintained it throughout the first two runs, successfully beat a very solid looking run from Marko Grilc until Eric Willett stepped things up with a clean run including a Frontside 10 Double Cork and a Double Rodeo 9. This run was enough to hold the competition at bay today. And it was in round three that young American Sage Kotsenburg got himself together with a massive run including a Front 9 and a Backside 10 Double Cork to claim second spot. And Grilo outdid himself on his last run, showed a Back 10 Late Cork and a Double Back Flip and claimed Bronze in the last minute.

Anyhow, here are the results:

1. Eric Willett (USA) 91.00
2. Sage Kotsenburg (USA) 85.33
3. Marko Grilc (SLO) 83.66
4. Stephan Maurer (SUI) 82.66
5. Chas Guldemond (USA) 70.66
6. Christian Haller (SUI) 67.66
7. Travis Rice (USA) 50.33
8. Iouri Podladtchikov (SUI) 49.33
