Due to complicated weathers situations, the Opening weekend of the Dachstein glacier had to be postponed one week and will now happen on June 5th 2010 instead of May 29th.
Before the Opening, the supporting cable of the Südwandbahn (southwall gondola) has to be changed – a procedure that only happens every 40 years (the present cable has been in appllication since 1969) and is done by a specialized Swiss company. Technical difficulties with some spare parts have caused quite some delay though, as they can only be taken up there by helicopter, that couldn’t fly due to heavy storms. So let’s hope the weather turns again soon so the work canf proceed!
So to all snow hungry shredders awaiting for the Opening: be patient just a little longer and hope for a more stabilized weather that will turn the summer into an endless winter for pure shredding pleasure! Or to put it in the words of snowboard professional Seppi Scholler, who’s desperately waiting for the opening: “I’m looking forward to UNCOUNTABLE great runs and pleasure at the Dachstein.”
Should the works be completed earlier, the gondola will go into service immediately, though at this time it is set with June 5th 2010.
