British Big Mountain Championships

The First ever British Big Mountain Championships will be taking place 19th-22nd March 2007 in the world-renowned Davos Klosters Mountains. The Davos Klosters ride has been created by Ride Freesports and Southwell Enterprises to further promote backcountry skiing and snowboarding in the UK and to give British Athletes a platform so they can compete in world class Freeride competitions like the Verbier Big Mountain Heli Ride.

Event directors Warren Smith, Chris Southwell and Nick Southwell believe this will be a huge opportunity for UK freeskiers and Snowboarders to be judged with IFSA sanctioning, gain TV exposure and to eventually take their level to that of a European and World athlete.

The event will be a World Tour Qualifier with the top three male and top two female skiers gaining entrance in to the qualifiers of the World Tour event the Big Mountain Heli Ride 2008 (Formally known as Verbier Ride). The event will also be a qualifier for snowboarders to a European Freeride event tbc.

The Klosters/Davos ride will incorporate a new judging system to include a freestyle aspect. The judging will follow along the lines of that of a normal format with athletes being marked on their line difficulty, control, fluidity, freestyle, form and technique.

The event will be covered by a 26-minute television programme to be shown on YOZ and Extreme sports channel. The programme will showcase the modern direction of Snowsports and give the UK audience the chance to see there own winter Freesport athletes in action.

“Davos Klosters with its high alpine mountains and the wide diversity of top quality attractions in sport, culture and entertainment, is the perfect location to guarantee a spectacular event on and off the slopes!” says event director Chris Southwell.

He adds: “We will offer a package for British snowsports enthusiasts to fly out to Davos and be part of the event. An attractive side programme during day and night will keep the crowd of the Davos Klosters Ride entertained throughout the week!”

The package includes flights, transfers, accommodation, lift passes, freeskiing classes, access to all official parties and more. Information will be available on soon.
