Strong winds force the organisers to postpone the finals until tomorrow

The Billabong World Junior Pro Leysin will be completed tomorrow morning at the Snowpark of the Mont de Chaux, in Leysin.

Today, finals were scheduled to start at 9.30am but unexpected strong winds have prevented the competition to resume. It will take until tomorrow to see the crowning of 2007 TTR World Junior Champions of Slopestyle, Boys and Girls.

The Billabong Word Junior Pro Leysin is the official World Junior Championships of Slopestyle, part of the TTR circuit. It gathers 45 Boys and 14 Girls, all aged 20 and under, from all over the world.

They are either invited by Billabong to compete or had to qualify through events that were staged in New Zealand, Canada and Switzerland.

It’s the 4th consecutive year the Billabong World Junior Pro is staged, but the first time in Switzerland, in the resort of Leysin, famous for organising world class events over the past two decades.

The host country is represented by three riders: Fabian Fassnacht (18), Jan Scherrer (12) and Nadja Putschvert (17), all three qualified at the VZ Trials in Thyon last week.

Nadja Putschvert will be in the Girls’ final tomorrow, alongside 9 other competitors coming from USA, France, Holland, Finland and Poland.

In the Boys competition, Jan Scherrer had the misfortune to be in the same hit as Finnish Joel Lahti (19) and Pekka Ruokannen (20, winner of the event in 2006), both considered as some of the world’s best juniors. Jan had a second chance to try and qualify for the semi-finals but did not go through. As for Fabian Fassnacht, he qualified for the semis, finishing second in Round 1 just behind one of the event’s favorites Arthur Longo (18, FR), but failed to continue and make it to the finals.

Eventually, this is a great performance and experience for these two young riders who had a chance to compete in a highly technical snowpark, alongside the world’s junior elite of snowboarding.

Tomorrow, organisers will have a meeting at 9am, to decide on the start of the Finals.

And tonight, at 7pm, legendary freerider Axel Pauporté will present LINES, the film about bigmountain snowboarding he has produced and directed.
