Big Air in Beijing

This weekend Burton Snowboards and Motorola hosted the first ever ‘Big Air in Beijing’, bringing snowboarding to the Beijing Pop Festival.

Taking place over September 9-10 in Beijing’s Chaoyang Park, the two-day music and lifestyle event drew over 30,000 attendees to see headlining music acts Supergrass, Placebo and Sebastian Bach as well as local Chinese artists Muma and XTX.

To complement the tunes, the sponsors gave snowboarders the opportunity to show off their skills on an 18-metre high big air jump that was built with 30 tons of scaffolding and 500 cubic meters of ice and snow. The event marked the first time that a Chinese urban center hosted a snowboard exhibition, and some of the world’s top pro riders turned out to celebrate, including Kazuhiro Kokubu, Tadashi Fuse, Luke Mitrani, Chris Rotax, Yale Cousino, Marko Grilc, Sani Alibabic, Shota Suzuki and Kevin Pearce.

“The vast majority of the 15 million people in Beijing have never had the chance to see snowboarding in person,” says Jake Burton, Founder and Chairman of Burton Snowboards. “This event shows people how fun our sport is and hopefully encourage some of them to get to a hill and try it themselves.”
