Air&Style: Marko Grilc Wins Superfinal

Once again, the Bergisel Stadium in Innsbruck turned into a mad boiling pot tonight when 16 of the best shreds in the world showed their skills over the kicker of the Air&Style event. After a gripping superfinal between Iouri Podladtchikov, Andreas Wiig, Peetu Piiroinen, and Marko Grilc, it was the latter who laid down the most consistent riding and took home victory.

Earlier that crisp winter night the rookie session was full of incredible riding. There was hardly a difference between these young guns and the stars of the main event: Niki Korpela landed a if slightly sloppy 1440, and Seppe Smits took victory with a super-clean back 12.

The Hives

On their way to the superfinals they had to one-up some next level shit from all contestants. Right from the warmup 2006 winner Travis Rice showed that everyone meant business that night with a massive double backflip. Wine bottles watch out as double and late corks seem to be the dernier cri: The three heats of the knockout stages’ first round saw Iouri stomping a massive double backside rodeo 9, Elias Elhardt and Grillo going for back 10 late corks, Peetu clearing the landing with a switch back 10 late cork, and Andreas Wiig going for the full double cork in his Front 10. Werni Stock showed two huge front 10 over the toe edge which got him past Chas Guldemond, who had nailed nothing less than a backside 12! Add Eero Ettala (who surpassed Risto Mattila) and Torstein Horgmo (beating unlucky Gigi Rüf) and you have all eight riders of the semifinal.

These heats showed even more awesomeness as most riders were able to repeat their impressive level of tricks. Andreas Wiig cleared another of his front 10 double corks, and his opponent Torstein had to give up after bailing hard at a switch back 12 attempt. Peetu popped higher than everyone else, which might make stomping your back 10s and cab 10s easier, or so they say. At least Eero could not get past him with his back 10 late cork. Local hero Werni Stock had to give in against an über-motivated Grillo who pulled out spins in all directions: back 10, switch back 9, and his favourite double backflip. And the fourth rider to advance to the superfinals was Iouri, who made an end to Elias’ back 10 late cork madness.

Happy winner Marko Grilc

And it was Marko Grilc, who made the Cinderella story perfect: Coming in to the contest as a substitute for injured Seb Toutant he outdid everyone else, had answers to Peetu’s 1260 attempt, Andy’s double corks and Iouri’s rodeos, and he took home the ‘ring of glory’ with a switch back 10.

Between the heats German hip-hop act K.I.Z. and Swedish indie group The Hives helped keep the crowd in its constant state of extasy. Year after year the Air&Style gives everyone quite a buzz regarding the future of snowboarding. All riders have upped the ante once again, and we are already looking forward to the contests to come!
