DAYUMM, Island Born & Vacation Forever Are Incoming! – Mini Reviews

We jumped on the premiere train as it tours around Europe

Roving movie trio DAYUMM, Vacation Forever and Island Born are tearing around the continent at the moment, and while we didn’t make it down to the usual London stop to catch up with the action, a new temporary office over in Innsbruck meant we were able to slow down this crazy train of film premieres just long enough to hitch a ride for a bit.

In attendance at the Austrian stop we had many of the same faces from the three films, Kevin Backstrom, Tor Lundstrom, Sebbe De Buck, Ulrik Badertscher and David Djite from BYND x MDLSVacation Forever, Sage Kotsenberg and Halldor Helgason from DAYUMM, and of course Eiki Helgason, joined by YOBEAT’s Justin ‘Stan’ Leveille who picked up where Scott Penman left off in London, presenting the evening as well as acting as a comic intermediary on screen in the Island Born flick…

Which undoubtedly the curve ball of the three movies. Stan does his best Louie Theroux impression while we hear a tongue in cheek backstory from the older of the Helgason brothers: farmland, sheep shearing and skate roots, not forgetting some brotherly rivalry – all laced with a tone that could appear serious if your sarcasm detection sensors weren’t firing properly.

Then, in contrast, there’s some absolutely stunning Icelandic scenery – waterfall side inverts that could put even the prettiest kicker spots to shame – as well as Eiki’s ongoing skate/innovate style trickery which is as stunningly impressive as ever.

It’s a film that parodies the documentary style while actually displaying some damn good skills, which can be a tad confusing when you’re a few beers down, but don’t let that put you off. Think of it as an Icelandic snowboarding take on Spinal Tap and get this one viewed ASAP when it pops up online on the 12th of December.

BYND x MDLS’ Vacation Forever is a much more conventional affair in comparison. We know where Kevin & Tor are at now really thanks to their social media savviness and the BYND x MDLS series , but they’ve stacked up a proper good crew for this flick, and knowing what you’re getting doesn’t make it any less enjoyable to see this lot sending it through powder all over the world and hitting sunset kickers when the light is just right.

David Djite makes a more than welcome return after a super high consequence bail at the Onboard Send Off Sessions in 2015, while folks like Sebbe De Buck break out some stand out moves – look out for confirmation that his Nine Knights ‘Ruler of the Hip’ title was well deserved, with a monster backside air that’s not to be missed!

Then, of course sections like the Japan sessions from Asahidake serve to further confirm that the Vacation Club really are living the good life, gapping through tree branches and bouncing off pillows like kids who just got their first taste of independence.

Paired up with some of the tastiest follow cam kicker lines, LAAX roller radness and more – it’s a joy to watch. Catch it in full online on the 26th of October.

Finally there’s the Golden Boy/Captain Harold combo DAYUMM, where street spot trickery meets Lobster flips off powdery cheese wedges.

This being slightly more stateside centric than the other two flicks means we get the added bonuses of US shred wizards like Max Warbington, Benny Milam and Jesse Paul on board for some absolutely ridiculous rail transfers and creative urban lines – as well as a gap to wallride opening session that commands attention, rooftop butter combos and an endless rotation of sick styles, each rider with their own different take on how to handle a spot.

“No repeats, no filler, no messing – DAYUMM keeps hitting you with hammers”

You can get a good idea of where they went for this one by watching the trailer, which went up today. No repeats, no filler, no messing (unless you count Sage’s Halldor style hay-tache), DAYUMM keeps hitting you with hammers. And we can easily see how it got its name, ‘cos that’s how it leaves you feeling. Catch the full film on October 24th on ABC’s World of X and online shortly after that.
