A Whole Bunch of Weird and Wonderful 90s Snowboard Ads

Though our print mag may be no more, we often flick through our archive of our own and others’ old rags for purposes of procrastination… Or research, if the boss is reading this. RESEARCH, dammit!

Amidst the genuinely awesome old snowboarding editorial – with, naturally, the occasional wack attack – and enjoying reliving the exploits of a bunch of legends who’ve mostly retired now, there are those other pages where brands from both snowboarding and beyond would try their damndest to hawk their new wares to you, young impressionable readers.

The ads. When brands get it right they remain ingrained on your memory (we still remember the Burton one from 95 listing the things snowboarding wasn’t, concluding with: “It’s you, scum.”), but equally there have been more than a few that elicited a raised eyebrow or two even back then. Now, it’s like taking the time tunnel the the Land that Aesthetics Forgot.

We leafed through some old issues and dug out some weird and wonderful ads from the 1990s to marvel at…

1991 – Hot Snowboards

“You wanna Super G wit me, baby?” Pure, smokin’ hotness from Hot.

1995 – Gotcha

We’re not sure what the red arrow denotes. Is he in there?

1995 – Matador

Thug Life: 1995 edition

1995 – DSF

Oversaturated guy-in-the-sky shot AND a Tindy? DSF, you’re spoiling us.

1996 – OBG

Our reaction stumbling on this: “Nice pow turn what’s wrong with… OH MY FUCKING GOD NOOOOOOO!”

1996 – Wave Rave

Some of these old ads are weird and lame. This one from Wave Rave is weird and pure genius.

1998 – Honda

Ah, back to plain WFT?! Who wants to buy a Honda?

1998 – Gnu

Aaaand back to genius. Gnu poke fun at the horror show that was many late 90s ads.

1998 –

We have no idea what we were thinking when we released this ad for our website. We were probably too busy looking at porn on this new-fangled internet thing.

1999 – 55DSL Grand Slam of Snowboarding

Honestly, we’ve can’t imagine what the design brief for this 55DSL comp must have been.

1999 – Killer Loop

It’s 1999 and Killer Loop came here to PARTY.

1999 – Nike ACG

No you don’t. Not for more than five years at a time, anyway.

1999 – Swatch

Swatch attempt to break the stereotype of late 90s snowboarders as a bunch of drug-addled degenerates by badly Photoshopping Steve Klassen jumping out a box of pills.

1999 – Oxygen

Stefan Gimpl was a great snowboarder. His ads? Meh, maybe not so much.
