JP Solberg has been a household name in snowboarding ever since he won the Transworld Rookie of the Year award in 2002. Over most of the  decade he impressed us with his backcountry prowess and style. However, with his untimely exit from the Burton global team, his era seemed to have ended. But fortune favours the brave and he landed on his feet with his own board company YES. and banger movie parts in the last two Absinthe movies, Neverland and NowHere. Time to catch up with him to see what’s been going on with our favourite switch rider.

1. You are part of the YES. crew, a bunch of riders most of the scene has looked up to for years. Is there anyone left that you yourself still look up to?

Terje has always been a huge inspiration for me and he still is, he says what he feels and never really gets caught up in politics or bullshit. You can always count on him to rip the shit up and represent snowboarding to the fullest.

2. What’s your exact role at YES.?

Hehe, PR Manager and Chief of Special Operations.

3. Are you thinking about focussing on the business side and stop fi lming video parts altogether?

No not all, the plan was to get over the hump with YES. and that took a lot of time, energy and effort. I knew that was gonna happen but now that we are proving to people that we are here to stay and more people get involved it’s time to get back to what I love doing the most!

4. What’s your best memory from the past season filming with Absinthe?

Romain and I went on a trip to Japan with Tadashi and his peeps for 3 weeks doing tradeshows, meeting shops and exploring the scene and the way they roll. We never knew what we were doing next because nobody really speaks English and all I can say in Japanese is cheers, YES. and boobs. But going there more then 15 times so far I feel like that was my first real trip to Japan, so effi ng sick, best place ever!

5. There’s rumours about a YES. movie. Can you tell us more about it?

Yeah, we want to explain the story behind YES. and show what we think snowboarding is all about. The movie is called “YES. it’s a Movie” and if you go to our website you can follow step by step how it’s all coming together with webisodes updated weekly.

6. Whose movie part is better? Yours in NowHere or your brother Stian’s in Hooked?

Probably my brother’s in Pirates.

7. When the two of you go riding together are you guys really competitive or is it all mellow brotherhood?

Mellow style finished with après ski.

8. If you had to pick either California or Norway what would you choose and why?

Norway, less polluted, better food, less people, better girls, no earthquakes, better fi shing etc. The list is long. But Cali is sick, uhmmmm…….

9. What’s the most Norwegian thing about you?

Probably that.

10. Who’s the best surfer on the YES. team?

11. What are the plans for the YES. team anyhow? Will you add more rookies to the roster?

Fuck yeah, we wanna make sure that whoever is on board is on for the right reasons. We’ll never add someone because they rip and their agent thinks it’s a good fit. Agents make me laugh. It’s one thing if you have someone who needs help because there’s a language barrier but this is a snowboard company. We will only add real people and riders that have their head and heart in the right place, who share the same passion, I’ll see to that as long as YES. is alive.

12. Is there anything you think hasn’t been said about your move away from Burton two years ago?

Thank you!

13. And does it blow your mind that there is a freeski pro with the same name?

I think it’s funny, but at the same time if I ever catch him using my name parallel and drawing a comparison I’ll whoop his ass.
