This season we're kicking off a series of In Focus takeover weeks – five days of content on a rider who's been getting us stoked for years, and giving them the keys to our Instagram to boot. For our first subject, we couldn't be more stoked to present one of our favourite hi-tech snowboarding goofballs - Mr Ethan Morgan. To get things rolling we look back at five edits that he's most proud of from his career so far.
When we first bandied around the idea for In Focus - a working week's worth of content centred around one particular rider - Ethan Morgan was one of the first dudes that sprang to mind. Naturally, for such coverage to be justified the person in question needs to have undeniable skills on a stunt stick – something Ethan clearly has in spades – but moreover we were after snowboarders who've been around the block, earned their stripes, have a bit of history to dive into, are respected by their peers, and are not shy of taking the bull by the horns to ensure the ride on the merry-go-round continues.
Ethan embodies all of this. From a fresh-faced Forum grommet who had precocious skills and a tendency to overachieve at the bar, he steadily stepped up from filming with his local crew, getting enders with Isenseven and even getting a part in with Standard Films. Once Nike went all 'rhythm method' he took it upon himself to embrace the DIY ethos and embarked on producing his own movies, the infamous Sponsor Me Tape, and just this past season he was responsible for a couple of 2017's more memorable slices of webspam - his Nordkette Top To Bottom, and the Khütai-based pipe dream, DIYX.
So we'll kick off Ethan's In Focus with a look at five of the video parts that he feels best represent him and his riding that he's put down over the years. Ethan will also be taking over the @onboardmag Instagram account for the next five days, so head over to see what looseness he'll be dumping out and follow #InFocusOnboard...
1. Ethan Morgan Sponsor me tape - 2015
"My Sponsor Me Tape definitely shows what I like to ride, and who I am. I had the most fun editing it with Dani (Dietrich). Love the random shit."
2. Top to Bottom Run Nordkette - 2017
"This was a different kind of project, but it still had that twist of me in there, and it was one of the funnest things I ever did. I had so much fun riding down that run on a daily basis, and adding jumps and hits to it every day. I have never been this strong in my legs after riding that run about 50 times, alone, in that week."
3. Intergalactic Park Edits - Di Dark Side of Di D-stone - 2016
"It's really sad that there is no more Dachstein and this edit pretty much sums up summer shred in Austria. Great times, random slush cruising, beers and full rail sending. This is a tribute to the good old D-stone, and was the first of my Intergalactic Park Edits from last season."
4. Rippendales Collective Movie Part - 2005
"This was my first video part when I was 14, and I ended up having the ender. It really meant a lot to me, filming for the first time, getting a full part, and just I was stoked to hang and ride with the whole Garmisch gang. Those were really good times."
5. TFA - We Out There movie part - 2013
"We Out There was our first TFA project, and I got the opener. This film used all my B-shots that didn’t make it into the Nike Never Not movie (which I was hyped on being a part of) and I really liked (videographer) Dani Diedrich's work.
Bonus Edit - That's It, And More - 2010
Ethan picked all the above, but we had to pull out our Joker's card and drop this in there from 2010: Ethan and his Forum Youngblood team mate Niki Korpela goofing around on a down day in Mammoth with a $10 'snowboard' and a patch of backyard snow. A cross between an homage to That's It, That's All and one of those Japanese shows where people try and break themselves, it's a throwback to when riders were just figuring out they could make whatever they want and put it on the internet. And it's pure goofball gold. More, please.
