We buckle into the men's week of our European Rider of the Year Awards, and kick off with our 5th placed rider - a dude hailing from the flatlands who has a track record of going bigger than most, and putting to rest the stereotype that big guys can't have style...
“Steezy, tall, creative sender!"
- Seppe Smits
When you think of riders with style, two words that won’t spring immediately to most people’s minds are ‘lofty’ and ‘Belgian’. Fortunately, Sebbe de Buck hasn’t let his height or his heritage stand in the way of being one of the best snowboarders around.
He’s a regular fixture on the elite contest circuit, placing 4th in the slopestyle at this year’s FIS World Champs (with fellow Belgian Seppe Smits taking the win - what exactly are they putting in those waffles…?). What’s really got our attention this year, however, is what he’s been getting up to at the more offbeat events; Peace Park, Nine Royals, the Poacher's Pipe, and his own Stubai-based showdown, Ring The Bell.
With a bit of freedom to flex his creative muscles rather than go for the high score, he can go toe-to-toe with anyone in the world. If you only watch one clip of Sebbe’s 2017, then it’s got to be his butter double cork from Nine Royals.
Towering over the snowboarding world in more ways than one, Sebbe de Buck is well worthy of his place on the #EROTY17 shortlist. Don’t be surprised to see him climb up the rankings in the years to come.
“For sending it always so hard!"
