We kick off the run-downs for our inaugural European Rider of the Year Awards today with the future of our sport: the young guns. And in 5th place is this 19-year-old Bavarian ripper with his head screwed on straight…

Remember the Millennium Bug? Maxi Preissinger doesn’t – he was still a babe-in-arms when the clock struck midnight in the year 2000. Now 19, this wünderkind from Starnberg is following in the footsteps of compatriots like David Benedek, Xaver Hoffman and Ethan Morgan and leading German snowboarding into the next decade.

Maxi is one of those grommets who suddenly got tall but lost none of their style (think Mikkel Bang). Honing his talents at the immaculately groomed Absolut Park, his rail game is predictably solid and features an afterbang the Robotfood crew would be proud of. Kickers, though, are where he really shines – Maxi has already featured at the Air & Style in Beijing and LA.

Legendary shred photographer Markus Fischer knows talent when he sees it:

“It’s his mindset that I’m particularly struck by,” he says. “Maxi is the first one in the park, and the last one to leave, with a great mixture of fun riding and working on his trick repertoire.”

That work ethic, combined with a healthy desire to keep things legit (Maxi shies away from the term ‘athlete’, and recently turned down a paid sponsorship deal in favour of free kit from a brand he preferred) means German snowboarding is in safe hands.
