“Thanks to the hotel Vötter´s Sport Kristall in Kaprun which has an amazing car museum in its basement!"
From the snow to the waves, Cheryl Maas is ripping. We tracked her down at the Chicken Jam in Kitzsteinhorn, Austria, and begged her to answer the questions that you sent in. Check out onboardmag.com for future Crossfirees and ask the pros the whys and wherefores of their world.
I think there is nothing sicker than riding for Forum. Why did you sign at Nitro? What is better at Nitro than at Forum? Malte, Hamburg
I left Forum because they wanted me to ride for them from top 'til toe, and I didn't wanna leave Volcom. So I looked for a new board sponsor. I signed with Nitro because I'm backing 100% what they do and how they do it. And also the boards are really good.
Forum inherited this hip hop, gangsta image whereas Nitro is more like rock ’n’ roll. Did your taste for music change too? Lydia, Madrid
I like all kinds of music, so no, my taste stayed the same.
Not only you have left Forum but so have JP, Lauri Heiskari, Devun Walsh. Is the Forum posse dying? Jon, Antwerpen
Well, there will always be a Forum posse. They are just new, up-and-coming riders.
Your part in Purple Yeahh! was killer. Go, girl! Are you satisfied and will we see you next year again in one of their movies? Malin, Sweden
I was happy with my part in Purple Yeahh! even though I wanted to have a longer part but I didn't had much time to film. This year I'm going to try to make it longer and even better.
You grew up riding dryslopes, right? When did you first get on snow and what did you think of it? Did it take you long to adapt? Do dryslopes have any advantage in comparison to the real mountains? Jan, Augsburg
When I was riding snow for the first time, it was strange because on the dryslopes I could already do 360s and stuff. When I was on the snow I had to learn a bit to make a turn again. But it didn't take long to get used to the snow. The advantage of dryslopes is that the jumps never change.
How did you get so good just from riding dry slopes? Selma, Spain
I think it's just in me, it doesn't matter what you ride.
Hey Cheryl, I’ve seen your upper arms in the Method interview. Not bad! Did you ever win a round of arm wrestling against a male pro? Karl, Innsbruck
I have never arm wrestled against a male pro, but I did against an ex-female pro (Stine Brun Kjeldaas) and two years ago she beat me but this year it was even. I got those arms from surfing, so it's different muscles you use.
You seem to be a very tough girl. Are you ever scared? Monica, Vermont
I maybe look tough but I get scared as well. I'm actually scared of heights.
When did you stomp your first 9 and what did it feel like? Clemens, Berlin
I stomped my first 9 in Czech Republic at the Roxy Jam training in 2006. It was a really good feeling. I didn't care any more about the contest because I had done what I wanted.
Hello Cheryl. First off, I think you are the best female rider out there. Although I am sure you know a ton of tricks, which trick do you wanna learn next? Marek, Poland
I want to learn an Underflip, but first I'm trying to spin all four ways.
If you could be a man for one day, what would you do? Martha, Vienna
I wouldn't wanna be a man for a day! It wouldn’t give me anything I can't get now!
Hello Cheryl, you bonnie lass. I was really into watching the last winter Olympics and saw that you came 11th in the pipe. Should slopestyle also become an Olympic discipline and will you take part in the next Olympics? Mike, Glasgow
I don't think slopestyle should be in the Olympics. Snowboarding is more a lifestyle not just a sport. I went for fun to see how it was. And it was a cool experience, but I'm not sure if I'll go again.
As a girl I think we need more girl movies. You had a part in Dropstitch, the first ever all-girl snowboard movie. Why was there no new Chunkyknit movie this year? Sybille, Cologne
It is hard to make a movie for the producers. It comes down to a lot more than just grabbing a camera. This year the Chunkyknit made some podcasts for Roxy.
I read in an interview that you love cars. Which kind of cars? The new techbeasts or beautiful oldtimers? Tom, Salzburg
The car I would like to have the most is a Ford Mustang coupe from 1967, and from the new cars I would like a Audi A4 S-line.
