Top brands abandon reverse camber tech for 2009/10!

Reverse camber, Rocker technology, Amptek, CamRock, Banana, call it as you like, negative camber is THE big thing for next year. You probably noticed it from all our posts covering 09/10 collections…Except Bataleon – coz they have TBT – almost every brand is offering at least one model with negative camber in its next winter collection, if not on all its decks. “Is”? We really should say “was”….

Lots of brands have realized that negative camber doesn’t work for the consumer and have decided to drop it partially or even completely!
First of all it’s over confusing. Until a couple of seasons back, a rider looking to purchase a board needed to decide according to the shape – freestyle, freeride, all mountain, stiffness, length, waist size – important for big feet, and graphics of course. Now brands are adding a new dimension: camber profiles!
Some brands offer up to 5 different profiles: classical positive camber, camber for powder, reverse camber only in between the feets, reverse with flat base under the feets, and some hybrid camber to round it up. It’s sometime summarized as S, V, U W camber shapes. WTF??? How do I choose a board now?
So it’s primarily the complexity of the product range offer that is making some brands take a step back on the camber hype.

Secondly and maybe most importantly, brands are realizing that reverse camber doesn’t work. Com’on back in 1985 boards were already rockin some rocker, but classical positive camber became the standard simply because it just works better, on every type of terrain. Jussi didn’t wait for the reverse camber comeback to nail buttery tricks nor JP to stomp nose presses! So brands realized that on the long run, reverse camber was not doing it and prefer to save on the costs for introducing these new shapes.

So in front of the difficulties faced by brands to explain to their consumers all these camber profiles AND because reverse camber doesn’t really bring much except the current coolness, some – no names till they make it official – are dropping it and that is the next hype dooders!
