Sorry if I'm repeating myself but the morning had started like the days before: It was raining.
The moguls and the big air were scheduled for the afternoon so Peter and I got to do some boring office work before we went up on the mountain at 1 p.m. My motivation was pretty low (of course it was still raining) but after a good friend of mine from Munich had called me I came back to appreciate where I am right now: Not sitting in an office doing stupid paper work, having to talk to people that don't understand your passion for snowboarding and thanking God that it is Friday.
So despite it was raining, my mood went up again and it actually turned out to be a pretty funny afternoon. Have you ever seen snowboarders doing a dual moguls course? Me neither! But Jonte Nilsson, Peter Ström and a few more riders gave their best to entertain the soaked audience with backflips and shiftys over the two small kickers in between a field of mean bumps. In the end it was Frederik Tegebro who was the fastest and brought it home in a very close final run against Jonte.
The big air was a completely different story though: The weather has worsened and now it was not only raining but also foggy. "One of the guys at the start said I can drop in now but I just thought: 'How can I drop in if I don't even see the kicker?", Peter Ström said after the contest where he became 3rd. But it was not only low visibility that made it difficult for the guys to show their skills, the in-run also looked a bit like the moguls course on the other side of the slope, so some of the riders already crashed before even hitting the kicker. Nevertheless Jonte Nilsson popped out a super smooth Cab 9 and won the big air comp - after his second place in the moguls event, he is a hot bet for the overall King of the Hill title which will be decided at the backcountry slopestyle tomorrow. This will be quite interesting as the riders can shape their own kicker on the course!
Just as I write these lines, small pieces of blue sky appear outside! Maybe I have to thank Marko Grilc for this: He is sitting next to me with a massive hangover from last night as the Pirates had some nice room party going on until 5 o' clock in the morning. And Justin, the filmer, thinks about going out and shooting the drop that they built in the last two days now - Marko doesn't look too happy but that is the only way it works: Drink and next day you'll have sunshine. Well, it is not really blue bird right now but that is maybe because Peter and me didn't join the party last night. Okay, this is getting serious now: Sani just popped in and now he and Marko are discussing who is going first. I need to go, lucky me that I can perfectly see the spot from the cafeteria inside the hotel! More will follow tomorrow...
