They may not have qualified for tomorrow’s X Games slopestyle finals but a lot has to be said for Halldor Helgason and Sage Kotsenberg’s runs in yesterday’s elimination stages.
Once again, the overall standard of riding was off the charts, with Morgan and McMorris stomping triples, Sven Thorgren hucking a back 14 and flawless doubles in all four directions from top qualifier Torstein Horgmo.
That said, all but two riders really looked like they were really enjoying themselves out on the course. We all know Halldor Helgason is a jester and a super good snowboarder but once again it was pure gold watching him as he mock-claimed pretty much every trick in his run. It certainly got us smiling and when the TV production dude cut back to the riders area, you could see that all of his fellow riders watching were hyped too.
Sure, his run wasn’t executed perfectly and his trick selection could have been heavier but it still had some crazy stylish tricks in it and most importantly, looked a lot of fun – even if it did leave Kier Dillon wishing ‘a kid with so much raw would just throw down’.
Also worthy of a mention was Sage Kotsenberg, who was injecting the spoice as ever. A full-circle eurocarve right in the middle of the rail section was a definite highlight, as was his Japan grabbed back ten double. We’re beyond stoked that this kid has made the US Olympic team and hope he can continue to keep it real with the whole world watching.
