What is Snowboarding? A sport? A lifestyle? An art form? It’s a simple question with an almost infinite number of answers… Check out the teaser for Definition: Snowboarding – a new snowboard documentary pencilled in for Fall 2015 that aims to showcase exactly what snowboarding means to the people involved in it.
Snowboarding has seen several projects like this one over the course of its existence, the most notable perhaps being David Benedek’s brilliant ’91 Words For Snow’ (Blank Paper Studios). Definition: Snowboarding sets out to be an up-to-date film that captures the very essence of what it means to be a snowboarder.
After a long winter spent shooting interviews and b-roll for the project, Definition: Snowboarding is moving into the next stage of development including the launch of a new website, gaining sponsorship and securing media support.
Aside from the riders interviewed in the teaser, the Definition: Snowboarding team have also shot interviews with Danny Davis, Frank April, Will Lavigne, Nick Suave, Chaz Guldemond, Shaun Palmer, Curtis Woodman, Spencer O’Brien, Jesse Burtner, Dale Rehberg, and Tim Peare. They are also in discussions with Andrew Mutty to use interviews he shot with Andy Finch, Danny Kass, Eddie Wall, Pat Moore, Jeff Brushie, Luke Mitrani, Mason Aguirre, Nate Bozung, Scotty Lago, Shaun White and Todd Richards.
Over the coming weeks, Matt Devino, director for Definition: Snowboarding and Brad Farmer, producer on the project will be securing verbal agreements with sponsors as well as reaching out to new potentials. Devino will also be working on a new trailer that will be released along with a Kickstarter campaign in the Fall aimed at getting individuals to support the project.
“The response to the concept trailer for Definition: Snowboarding has been amazing,” says Devino. “I received dozens of emails from total strangers who were excited about the film. I also received a ton of great feedback from people in the Snowboard Industry. The most common thing people said to me about the trailer was that it got them excited about snowboarding and that it made them want to get out there and ride their boards more often. This positive response has made it clear to me that this is a film people want to see and thus I have to make it. Throughout the winter of 2013/2014, I was able to interview some amazing riders such as Danny Davis, Frank April, Shaun Palmer, Jesse Burtner, and many more. Once we secure funding, I’ll be able to focus on the film full time and shoot the final few interviews I need, as well as get out there and shoot some exciting riding for the film. I can’t wait to get going.”
“I also have heard nothing but positive responses from everyone who I’ve had the opportunity to discuss the project with,” says Farmer. “I believe that the snowboard industry is ready for a film like this. We really want the whole industry to be represented in this project including riders, brands, media, resorts, retailers and everyone who works in the business or just loves to snowboard. Hopefully, with a little support from everyone, we can make this happen on a very grass roots level and create a film about snowboarding that we can all be proud to present to the world.”
What is Snowboarding? A sport? A lifestyle? An art form? Or, is it something completely different? It’s not a simple question and it has an unlimited number of answers…
Definition: Snowboarding will be an in-depth look into all of the genres of snowboarding through the eyes of those who live it.
